The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers. Deadline for obituary news is 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased’s children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews, or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased are items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

Irene Mimms

Irene Ashe Mimms, 91, of Lewisburg, Tenn., died Monday, Oct. 1, at Maury Regional Hospital.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, in the chapel of Williams Funeral Home in Columbia, Tenn., with the Rev. Ezell Rose officiating.

Burial was in Polk Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Jimmy Aslinger, Bill Shelton, Loyd Witherspoon, Jimmy Black, Tony Scott and Kirby Howell.

Born in Jackson County on May 16, 1916, she was the secretary for Pleasant Heights Baptist Church. She enjoyed painting pictures, quilting and going to flea markets. She was a member of the Riverview Baptist Church.

The daughter of the late Hamilton and Maggie Rankin Ashe, she was also preceded in death by husbands, John Lyndon Carden and Thomas C. Mimms.

Surviving are two sons, Gary Carden of Sylva, and Thomas C. “Tommy” Mimms of Pulaski, Tenn.; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.



Myrtis Murphy

Myrtis Murphy, 88, of Cullowhee, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, at her residence.

Services will be held at a later date in Alabama.

Moody Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.



Luther Shelton

Luther Auvin Shelton, 85, of Chattanooga, Tenn., formerly of Webster, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2007.

Services were held at noon Friday, Sept. 21 in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Haskins officiating.

Burial was in National Cemetery.

He was retired from the Tennessee Valley Authority and was a member of Tyner United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Airforce during World War II.

A son of the late Lonnie and Ona Shelton, he was also preceded in death by one son, Carroll Shelton; one brother, Deward E. Shelton; and one sister, Alma Williams.

Surviving are his wife, McAline Shelton; one brother, Lonnie Shelton; two stepsons, Bill Childers and Michael Childers Sr.; and two stepgrandchildren.



Gladys Brindley

Gladys Joan Brindley, 73, of Whittier, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home.



Grace Kolb

Grace Kolb, 102, of Sylva, died Friday, Oct. 5, 2007, at Morningstar Assisted Living.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
