East Henderson rallies for win over Lady Mustangs

East Henderson came from behind in games two and four to defeat Smoky Mountain 20-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-23 in a Western Athletic Conference volleyball match last Thursday at East.

“Game three is what got us because that’s the only game we didn’t start out with the lead,” Coach Natasha Wilson said. “The other games were so close. We played our best together as a team. The coherence was there. In the fourth game, East just got lucky. Those last couple of points could have gone either way. We were on offense more than defense. That’s what I was hoping for.”

The Lady Mustangs (4-13, 0-7) held a 16-11 lead in the first game after three points from Jodi Henkel and Brittany Gilbert’s kill. The game ended on Natasha Key’s kill for a side out.

SM led most of the second game after going up 7-4 on Kelly Childress’ three points, including two aces, and Gilbert’s kill. The Lady Mustangs stayed ahead until late when East scored the final four points.

The Lady Eagles dominated game three after jumping to an 11-4 advantage.

The Lady Mustangs held a narrow lead most of the fourth game, but East ended the match with a 6-1 spurt.

Gilbert finished with 12 assists and eight kills. Childress also had eight kills, and Brittany Haskett handed out 11 assists.

Haskett had 10 service points and didn’t miss in 20 serves. Henkel was perfect in 17 serves. Gilbert served 92.9 percent followed by Cassie Randall (90.9) and Annelise Davis (90).

Team serving was 94.3 percent.

The Lady Mustang JVs improved to 4-13 with a 23-25, 25-12, 25-19 victory.

“They pulled together as a team and didn’t give up,” Coach Nichole Efird said. “That’s what it’s all about. All of them did their part.”
