Brevard hands SM loss in WAC volleyball play

Brevard defeated Smoky Mountain 25-18, 25-13, 25-21 in a Western Athletic Conference volleyball match Oct. 2 at the SM gym.

“I felt like we were playing defense the entire match,” Coach Natasha Wilson said. “We couldn’t get anything going on offense. We started out strong in games one and three, but we just couldn’t finish. We’ve got to learn to finish.”

The Lady Mustangs held a 5-1 edge in the first game when Jodi Henkel served three points. After falling behind, they rallied to go up 13-9 on Cassie Randall’s three service points. Brevard turned things around and finished the game on an 11-2 run.

The Lady Devils were in control from the start of game two as they jumped to a 7-1 lead and never looked back.

SM’s Brittany Haskett served the third game’s first six points, including an ace. The Lady Mustangs were up 14-9 after four points by Brittany Gilbert. Just as happened in game one, Brevard finished strong and ended the match on a 7-1 run.

Haskett had seven assists, and Gilbert put down five kills.

Haskett led in service points with nine while serving 93.3 percent. Not missing a serve were Henkel (11), Kelly Chidress (nine) and Annelise Davis (five).

Team serving was 92.9 percent.

The Brevard JVs rallied to win 8-25, 25-23, 25-17.

“We started really good, but one game isn’t going to win it,” Coach Nichole Efird said.
