Big second half helps Mustang soccer team win over Knights
Smoky Mountain pulled away in the second half to defeat North Henderson 6-2 in Western Athletic Conference soccer action Oct. 1 at Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field.
“They’re very quick and pesky,” Coach Dolphus Brown said of the Knights, who were down just 2-1 at halftime “That gave us a lot of trouble. Our guys didn’t slack off. We pushed through and got some goals.”
Matt Dougherty was credited with the first goal when his throw-in went through the hands of the keeper and into the net in the seventh minute.

The Mustangs regained the lead less than a minute later as Richard Ramirez took a Martin Davis pass on the right side, dribbled once and shot from 5 yards.
SM went up 3-1 two minutes into the second half on an own goal.
“Cort (Smith) made that happen,” Brown said. “He took a shot that ricocheted off one of their players.”
Smith headed in a throw-in from Dougherty making it 4-1 in the 49th minute.
Martin Davis made it 5-1 in the 56th minute. The play started with a free kick, and Davis dribbled around a couple of players before shooting from 15 yards.
Rodriquez scored from 8 yards out following a corner kick cutting the gap to 5-2 in the 71st minute.
Smith’s penalty shot after a foul in the box ended the scoring with less than a minute to play.
The Mustangs had a 15-6 advantage in shots. North’s Luis Obispo made six saves, and SM’s Eli Corwin had four.
The Mustang JVs won 2-0. Jared Couch and Blake Masson scored, and Brandon Norris provided an assist.
“They are possessing and distributing the ball well,” Coach John Douthit said. “They play with a lot of heart.”
