This building, constructed of bricks made from Webster clay, was Jackson County’s second Courthouse in Webster and was used until the county seat was relocated to Sylva in 1913. The structure, which stood near the corner of N.C. 116 (Webster Road) and Buchanan Loop, was built on the same site as an earlier brick courthouse, which was destroyed by fire. It was torn down in the 1930s. The photo above was taken in 1932; Ann Cowan is standing is the doorway. The Sylva Herald publishes either a 'Then and Now' or 'Back Then' photograph each week. For information or to submit photos, call Nick Breedlove at 586-2611, ext. 310, or e-mail him at nick@thesylvaherald.com.
