SM spikers fight breast cancer
Members of Smoky Mountain’s volleyball team proudly wear pink shirts to show their support for breast cancer awareness. Team members are, from left: (front) Kelly Childress, Brittany Gilbert, Cassie Randall. Brittany Haskett and Megan Taylor; (middle) Annelise Davis, Natasha Key, Jodi Henkel and Hannah Painter; (back) assistant coach Sara White, Felicia Johnson, Laura Ward, bus driver Karissa Henson and Coach Natasha Wilson. “We have decided that as a team we want to give something back to the community,” said Gilbert, a senior captain. “Wearing pink is for breast cancer awareness. We choose this because it’s a disease that affects women. We’re a women’s sport, and it’s starting to appear in younger women. We’re going to be selling breast cancer awareness items at games. All proceeds will go to the Hope Center in Asheville.” Wilson’s cousin is fighting the disease at a young age, and that helped to provide the inspiration for the team’s action. “I’m hoping other Smoky Mountain sports teams will follow suit in supporting charitable organizations,” Wilson said. “I’m also hoping this is something the volleyball team will continue to do and it will grow each year. We’re really excited about it.” |
