Soldier Sanders
Soldier E. Sanders, 88, of Cherokee’s Wolfetown community, died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2007, at the V.A. Medical Center in Asheville, after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, at Cherokee United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Steve Phillippi, Jeff Ramsland and Bo Parris officiating.
Burial was in Sanders Family Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army and Steve Youngdeer VFW Post 8013.
A native of St. Adair County, Okla., he was the son of the late Tim and Lydia Buzzard Sanders and had lived in Cherokee since 1960. He retired from the Bureau of Indian Affairs and Sequoyah Indian School and had served as the Maggie Valley postmaster. He was a prisioner-of-war escapee/evadee during World War II while serving in the U.S. Army Air Force.
Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Emma Catherine Blythe Sanders; two daughters, Karen Sanders “Wren” Peterson of Augusta, Ga., and Faren Sanders Crews of Shellman Bluff, Ga.; two sons, James E. “Butch” Sanders of Cherokee, and William D. “Bill” Sanders of Lemoore, Calif.; one sister, Frances Sanders; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Cherokee United Methodist Church Chime Fund, or the Soldier Sanders Scholarship Fund, Sequoyah Indian School, Tahlequah, Okla.

Louise Morgan
Louise Morgan, 97, of Sylva, died Monday, Aug 20, 2007, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center.

Helen Dixon
Helen Atkins Pendergrass Dixon, 86, of Whittier, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2007.
Services were held at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, at Shoal Creek Baptist Church, of which she was a member.
The daughter of the late Howard Atkins and Mary Laurenson Atkins, she was born in Storrs, Conn., and moved with her family to Orlando, Fla., in 1926. She was employed by Max Fleischer’s Studio in Miami, Fla., as an animation artist, sketching characters such as Betty Boop. She also drew some of the sketches in the original book, “Gulliver’s Travels.” She was a veteran of the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, based at the Pentagon in the aerial photography department. After her honorable discharge in 1943, she moved back to Orlando and worked for Olan Mills Studio as a professional photographer. She worked at Martin Marietta Astronautics Corporation as an electronics technician, working on the Pershing missiles. An avid artist, photographer and gardener, she played the Hawaiian guitar and the piano and sang gospel music.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter, Donald and Kenneth Atkins.
Surviving are two daughters, Helen “June” Rickman and Kathleen Joy White; two grandsons; and one great-grandson.

Rondall Cole
Rondall M. “R.C.” Cole, 82, of Cashiers, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2007.
Graveside services were scheduled to be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, at Hyatt Cemetery.
He was a son of the late W.C. Cole and Margaret Monteith Cole. A veteran of World War II, he worked for the N.C. Forest Service for 35 years. He was a member of Hyatts Chapel Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Vernie and Kelly Cole.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Ruth Beck Cole; three daughters, Joyce Hurley, Wanda Cole and Bonnie Metcalf, all of Bryson City; one son, Ron Cole of Bryson City; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Janet Geddes
Janet Geralyn Glauner Geddes, 54, of Whittier, died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2007, after a battle with ovarian cancer.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug, 18, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Ray Williams officiating
Burial will be at Memorial Gardens in Fort Myers, Fla., at a later date.
She was born Aug. 18, 1952, in Evanston, Ill., to Nancy Scanlon and Norman Glauner. After residing in Florida for 34 years, she moved to Western North Carolina in 2001. A graduate of Fort Myers High School, she attended Edison Community College. She was a licensed Florida real estate broker and had worked as a legal secretary and high school secretary. She was an avid reader and enjoyed the beach and Charleston, S.C.
She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Marion Scanlon; and her stepfather, John Mueller.
Surviving are her husband of 25 years, Bill Geddes; her mother, Nancy Scanlon Mueller; her father and stepmother, Norman and Jean Glauner; three half brothers, Louis, Bill and Mike; one half sister, Susan; two stepbrothers, Tom and John; and four stepsisters, Mary Lynn, Barbie, Sandy and Jacci.

Jackie Inman
Jackie Inman, 62, of Creation Lane, Balsam, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2007, at her residence after a period of declining health
Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Mark Stiles and J. B. Chastain officiating.
Burial was in Shook Cemetery. Pallbearers were Wade Duncan, Johnny Jones, Dwayne Ledford, Larry Stinnett, Stan William and Hugh Kirkpatrick.
A native of Jackson County where she had lived most of her life, she was a daughter of the late Oscar Chastain and was raised by the McCoy family.
Surviving are her husband, Johnny Inman; two daughters, Libby Houston and Mickey Davis both of Balsam; one sister Eloise Kinkaid of Oakland, Calif.; two brothers, James “Woody” Chastain of Burbank, Ill., and Tom McCoy of Sedro-Wooley, Wash.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Mozelle Jones
Mozelle Hooper Jones, 80, of God’s Few Acres Drive, Walhalla, S.C. died Saturday, August 18, 2007, at Oconee Memorial Hospital.
Services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 22, at Rocky Knoll Baptist Church.
Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
A native of Sylva, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Maybelle Hooper. She was a retired employee of Sangamo Industries and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Jvan Jones Sr.; one daughter, Brenda Jones Winkler; and one grandson.
Surviving are one son, Howard Jvan Jones, Jr. of Walhalla; one daughter, Glenda J. Scroggins of Lugoff, S.C.; one brother, Truman Hooper of Sumpter, S.C.; and two sisters, Lillian Aldridge of Cullowhee and Edna McClure of Murphy; four grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Russell
Dorothy Russell of Highlands died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be in Hamburg Cemetery.
Victoria Rose
Victoria Rose, 65, of Cullowhee, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2007, at Harris Regional Hospital.
Services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Ray Williams officiating.
Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were David Rose, Sean Rose, Peter Grant, Paul Stoppi, William Lai and Christopher Smith.
A native of Kingston, Jamaica, she was a daughter of the late William and Alice Lai. She was a former resident of Boca Raton, Fla., and had lived in Jackson County since 2001.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Mavis Stoppi.
Surviving are her husband, Dave Rose; two sons, David and Sean Rose, both of Cullowhee; one daughter, Michelle Rose of Palm Coast, Fla.; four brothers, Edward Lai of Toronto, Canada, Wilfred and Winston Lai, both of Miami, Fla.; and George Hew of Ocho Rios, Jamaica; and two sisters, Joyce Young of Miami and Carmen Jones of Delray Beach, Fla.
Memorials may be made to the Community Table of Sylva.

Sue Broom
Ola “Sue” Gaddis Broom of Waynesville died unexpectedly Saturday, Aug. 18, 2007.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with the Revs. Johnny Norris and Jay Jones officiating.
Pallbearers were Josh and Aaron Fernandez, Steve and Richard Gaddis, David Conklin Jr. and Kenny Broom. Patrick Broom was honorary pallbearer.
She was a daughter of the late Joseph Allen Gaddis and Bertha Wyatt Gaddis. She enjoyed watching football, flower gardening and watching her grandchildren play sports. She was administrator of Mauney Cove Family Care for 14 years and a member of Lake Junaluska First Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Buddy Allen Broom; and one brother, Charles E. Gaddis.
Surviving are her husband, Sherlie Ira Broom; one daughter, Janet Broom Fernandes of Waynesville; one son, Wayne Broom of Waynesville; one sister, Martha Gaddis Harrell of Waynesville; two brothers, Joseph S. Gaddis of Canton and Billy Wayne Gaddis of Waynesville; and five grandchildren.
