Mills, SMHS assistant principal, leaves post

Local school officials accepted the resignation of Smoky Mountain High School Assistant Principal Joe Mills Aug. 13.
That action came during a special meeting of the Jackson County Board of Education that was called to discuss personnel matters.
Mills was named to the post in 2005. Before then, he served as assistant principal at Sebastian River High School in Sebastian, Fla., where he also coached high school football.
Mills earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Central Florida in 1990 and a master’s degree in education leadership from Nova Southeastern University in 2000. He has taught at several junior high and high schools in Florida, mostly as a teacher for exceptional children.
He resigned his position at SMHS to return to Florida.
In other personnel action Aug. 13:
– Resignations were accepted from School of Alternatives teacher aide Melanie Bibbs; SMHS biology teacher Robin Nations; SMHS head baseball coach Marvin Schade; and School of Alternatives exceptional children’s program teacher Judy Webb.
– Approved employee recommendations include:
Blue Ridge: Helen Thrasher, guidance counselor.
Cullowhee Valley: Penny Grimes, media assistant; Amber Jordan, exceptional children’s assistant; Julie Mathis, teacher’s assistant; and Steve Santoro, sixth-grade math teacher.
Fairview: Sharon Conlin, second grade teacher; and Jeremy Ellenburg, physical education teacher.
School of Alternatives: Stephanie Burns, special education bus monitor; Christine McWhirter, special education teacher; Holly Rowan, pre-kindergarten/homebound special education teacher; and Angie Sims, special education teacher;
Scotts Creek: Byron McCall, physical education teacher; Kathy McFadden, kindergarten teacher;
Smokey Mountain Elementary: Jennifer Speier, teacher’s assistant; Dora Watkins, academic and intellectually gifted and Title 1 enrichment teacher;
SMHS: Kimberly Williams, family consumer sciences teacher.
Blue Ridge/Cullowhee Valley: Shannon Woodring, special education bus monitor.
– Approved as substitute teachers were Cynthia Barnes, Jeanna Martin, Jennifer Triplett and Janet Watson-Whisnant.
– Approved bus drivers were Charles Bean, Fairview; Craig Rummler, Smokey Mountain Elementary; Stacy Stiwinter, Blue Ridge; and David Snell, Fairview.
– Non-staff coaches approved were Rocky Benefield, assistant soccer coach and Sara Bruegger, head soccer coach, both at Fairview; Nichole Efird, SMHS head JV volleyball coach; Meredith Morgan, assistant soccer coach, Cullowhee Valley; and Jason Stanley, assistant varsity and JV football coach, SMHS.
– Kristin Menickelli was granted a special request for a leave of absence from Fairview.
– Transfers included Kristin Holt, from Fairview to Cullowhee Valley; sixth-grade teacher Terri Walawender, from Fairview to Cullowhee Valley; and Natasha Wilson, from Fairview to exceptional children’s teacher at SMHS.
