Volunteer firefighters provide valuable service
To the Editor:
How many people are willing to work all day on a public job and instead of a hot meal and spending time with the family are willing to burn an old house or do whatever the community needs?
That’s what members of the Cullowhee Fire Department do. These people stay out late and eat pizza from a tailgate, just as a service to the community. Remember, they are volunteers.
Then, they go and put up the trucks, making sure they are ready for an emergency, fire or wreck. They may get some rest before having to go out again, then get up the next morning and go to work.
I commend the Cullowhee Fire Department for coming out and giving their time to burn an old house. These are guys that do a great deal for our community but get little recognition. They have a dangerous job, and we should remember them in our prayers.

Clean air advocates should address chemical spraying
To the Editor:
The Canary Coalition director, who recently wrote a letter advertising a march for clean air, will have a hard time convincing the public of his coalition’s fight to breathe clean air unless it addresses the chemicals (I believe are) being sprayed nightly by the U.S. military and meets with federal representatives to stop it.
Otherwise their fight will be in vain, and the coalition will be labeled as just another non-profit organization that is politically compromised.
