Webster officials declare ‘Lacy Thornburg Day’

By Justin Goble

Webster leaders voted unanimously Aug. 2 to declare Wednesday, Aug. 29, as Lacy Thornburg Day in the town.

The day coincides with the unveiling of a portion of U.S. 23/74 that has been named after Thornburg. County commissioners requested the section from the Jake Parris Jr. Bridge to Exit 85 be named in his honor.

A ceremony celebrating the road naming is planned at 9 a.m. in Southwestern Community College’s Myers Auditorium.

Thornburg has served as a U.S. District Court judge since 1995.

A former State Superior Court judge, he was twice elected North Carolina’s attorney general, holding that office from 1993-2001.

Thornburg served three terms in the N.C. House of Representatives in the 1960s. He is considered instrumental in getting funding for several capital projects on the Western Carolina University campus during his time in the legislature.

“Throughout his public career, Lacy has always proudly proclaimed Webster as his home,” Mayor Steve Gray said. “We’re glad to honor him.”
