Three are injured after pair of wrecks
By Carey Phillips
Two accidents within the past week resulted in three people being airlifted to Mission Hospitals in Asheville.
The most serious incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. Friday (Aug. 10) at the westbound Whittier exit on U.S. 74. Two people trying to push a disabled vehicle from the deceleration lane were airlifted from the scene after that accident.
Lillian Elaine Allison, 38, of Bryson City, was later transferred to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was listed in good condition Tuesday afternoon.
Her husband, Timothy Daniel Allison, also 38 of Bryson City, was released from Mission on Tuesday.
According to Trooper Steve Allred of the N.C. Highway Patrol, the Allisons were trying to push their 1990 Chevrolet van from the deceleration lane when the vehicle was struck from behind by a 1993 Buick station wagon driven by Sylva business owner Dodie Allen-Blaschik of Whittier.
Allen-Blaschik, who was not seriously injured, was charged with failure to reduce speed, Allred said.
Two other people who had stopped to help the Allisons were able to get out of the way of the Buick, according to Allred.
The other wreck occurred about 5 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 8) and sent Patrick Wayne Orth, 21, of Tiger Lily Court, Cullowhee, to Mission. He has since been released.
Orth was traveling west on Little Savannah Road (S.R. 1367) near the Western Carolina University campus on a motorcycle when a pick-up truck driven by David Matthew Wallet, 35, of Cavalier Drive, Cullowhee, made a left turn from S.R. 1552 in front of Orth, according to a report filed by Trooper Derek Robinson.
The motorcycle collided with the driver’s side door of the pickup, the report said.
Wallet was charged with failure to yield.
Orth was taken by ambulance to a field on the WCU campus and was airlifted to Asheville from there.
