A Cashiers man accused of stealing two vehicles remains in jail on charges that also include property crimes and resisting arrest.
Darryl Wayne Schiele, 21, of Slabtown Road was arrested Aug. 5 and charged with the June 26 theft of a 2007 Toyota Land Cruiser and the Aug. 4 theft of a 2004 Dodge pickup, according to Capt. Steve Lillard of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
Schiele was linked to the first theft after he was seen driving a Toyota that matched the description of a vehicle stolen from the Village Green in Cashiers, Lillard said. The stolen Toyota was found Aug. 4 on Double Springs Road in Cullowhee, at the same location the pickup was taken from, Lillard said. The Sheriff’s Office obtained warrants on Schiele for auto theft, forgery and uttering. The pickup was found on Laurel Knob Road on Aug. 5, and Schiele was subsequently located near Zeb Alley Road, according to Lillard. He fled on foot though the woods, officers gave chase and Schiele was taken into custody on Poinsettia Lane, Lillard said.
Deputy Kenneth Woodring, assisted by Deputies Dwight McMahan and Sean Bryson, obtained the initial warrants on Schiele. After the suspect was in custody, Lts. Jimmy Clawson and Clyde Rice were able to tie Schiele to other crimes and recover additional stolen property, including a four-wheeler that had been stolen with the pickup, Lillard said.
Schiele, whose bond was set at $48,000, faces four counts of breaking or entering a motor vehicle; four counts of larceny after breaking or entering; two counts of larceny of motor vehicles; one count of obtaining property by false pretense; one count of resisting arrest; one count of forgery and uttering; and one count of possession of stolen goods.
