Ruth Crawford of Sylva shared this 1957 photo of the Jackson County Junior Women’s Club, a community service organization that raised money for various charitable causes. Crawford, who was named the outstanding clubwoman that year, said the group used to hold fashion shows, bake sales and other fund-raisers. Members included, from left, (seated, front row) Loquita McRorie, Linda Gray, Carmen Allison, Helen Rowland, (seated, second row) Lou Nicholson, Helen Hooper, Betty Nicholson, Doris Buchanan, Mrs. Warren Chestnutt, Joyce Clayton Lovin, Ruth Crawford, Jean Cogdill, Bleakadee Franklin, (third row, standing) Dot Revis, Dot Hunt, Peggy Cagle, Peggy Revis, Jane Buchanan, Mrs. Tom Bresnahan and Pat Holt. The Sylva Herald publishes either a “Then and Now” or “Back Then” feature on a weekly basis. Readers who have photos taken in Jackson County that are at least 25 years old and include a recognizable feature (such as an existing building, highway, mountaintop or ridgeline) are invited to submit them for use in “Then and Now.” Other interesting photos will be considered for “Back Then.” Photos can be dropped off or mailed to the newspaper office. As a convenience to those who prefer not to let cherished photos out of their sight, Herald photographer Nick Breedlove will scan photos Tuesday and Wednesday mornings between 10 and 11 a.m. Those with questions about potential “Then and Now” or “Back Then” photos may contact Breedlove at 586-2611, ext. 310, or by e-mail at nick@thesylvaherald.com.
