Greening Up festival to bring music, fun to downtown - You’ve read about the music, the vendors and the crafts. 042607forestfirestCanada-area fire scorches 200 acres - Firefighters from Cullowhee and Canada fire departments, along with crews from the N.C. and U.S. Forest Service, spent Sunday night battling a blaze that charred 200 acres high on Rich Mountain. The fire was reported around 6 p.m. Sunday, according to N.C. Forest Service District Ranger Gary Mease. The blaze, which started on the Canada side in the Cedar Valley area, burned through Rich Mountain Gap and down into the head of Johns Creek on the Caney Fork side, said Canada Fire Chief Steve Luker. 042607underwooddrugstOfficers seize cocaine marijuana, weapons, cash, jail 10 suspects during past week - Jackson County Sheriff’s Office personnel had a busy week as they arrested 10 suspects in a series of searches driven by an ongoing drug investigation. They seized 3.8 pounds of cocaine, eight firearms and 10.8 pounds of marijuana at one Balsam residence where they arrested three people. Local law enforcement personnel also worked with Georgia authorities to recover property....


BRS principal hired; finance officer resigns - Meeting Monday (April 23) at Cullowhee Valley School, local school officials filled one key position – that of principal at Blue Ridge School – but lost a significant figure in the Central Office. Veteran Georgia administrator Roy Sapough will replace current BRS Principal Carol Rector, who notified school board members in February that she would retire at the end of this year for health reasons. EDC members are questioned about 2002 loan to JDC - A local resident asked questions about the Economic Development Commission during the board’s meeting Monday night (April 23). Dillsboro resident Jim McCarthy addressed the board and said he wanted to know what has been done to collect an outstanding loan the EDC made in 2002 to its property-holding offshoot Jackson Development Corp. The JDC borrowed $567,000 from the EDC as part of the $800,000 purchase.....
