Western women to face ETSU in NIT tonight

Western Carolina’s women’s basketball team will host former Southern Conference foe East Tennessee at 7 p.m. tonight (Thursday) at the Ramsey Center in the first round of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament.

The Lady Cats (23-9) earned the Southern Conference’s automatic bid to the postseason tournament by being the number one seed in the conference tourney. They lost a chance to play in the NCAA Tournament by falling to Chattanooga in the SC championship game.

ETSU (20-11) is now a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Lady Bucs also lost in their tournament final.

The winner of the WCU-ETSU game will face Virginia Tech and former WCU Coach Beth Dunkenberger in the second round.

For the first time, each of the nation’s 31 conferences will be represented in the WNIT as the tournament has expanded to 48 teams this year to accommodate an automatic berth for each league.

Tickets are $10 for reserved seats. General admission is $7 for adults and $4 for children and students.
