Contest Rules - Spring Photo Contest 2007

Please read all rules carefully before submitting. Any entry not complying with rules will be rejected.

1. Photographs submitted must be in color and must have been taken by the entrant. Photos taken at any time (not necessarily this spring) may be entered as long as they were taken by the person submitting the photo. Photos cannot be computer enhanced, unless entered in the “Creative/Artistic/Digitally Enhanced” category, but may be digital (Read instructions below).

2. Participants may enter up to two photos (use one application form per photo submission). Pictures must be unframed, unmounted/unmatted and at least 5” x 7” in size. An application form (may be photocopied) MUST be taped to the back of EACH photo.

3. Preference will be given to photos taken in Jackson and other Western North Carolina counties.

4. All photos entered should reflect the theme, “Mountain Spring,” and should be of outdoor scenes displaying the beauty of spring.

5. Winning photos will be announced and displayed Saturday, April 28, at the downtown Greening Up the Mountains festival. Ribbons will be awarded. Winning photos will be published in subsequent issues of The Sylva Herald.

6. Employees of The Sylva Herald and their families may not enter.

7. All qualifying photos will be on display through June 30. Due to the volume of entries received, prints and CDs will NOT be returned.

Digital Guidelines & information about the ‘Creative/Artistic/Digitally Enhanced” Category

Images entered in the main contest category may not be computer enhanced or otherwise altered. Computer enhanced refers to modifying a digital image in such a way that it would change the content, i.e. adding or removing objects, drastic changes in composition, making a collage of more than one image, etc. We would welcome adjustments made to the brightness/contrast, dodging/burning & cropping as these are activities that can be performed in any darkroom/photo lab.

Please note: If you enter the “Creative/Artistic/Digitally Enhanced” Category, you’re welcome to use artistic freedom such as adding/subtracting elements, use selective coloring, changing compositions, etc. Please check the box on the entry form to enter this category. This category will be judged separetly from the main category.

Please read the following guidelines & requirements:

1. You must have a photo print made of the digital image--inkjet print on photo paper will not be accepted. You can have a print made from a digital file at many photo finishers, Wal-Mart, Livingston’s Photo, etc. You can also chose an online photo finisher and upload a digital file to have printed, like shutterfly.com, ofoto.com, ezprints.com, & wal-mart.com.

2. In addition to having a print made, you must supply us with a high resolution copy of the digital image. You must supply us with this file in addition to the print. This allows us to get a good print of it if it should appear in the paper as a winner.

3. The digital version to accompany the print can be emailed to photos@thesylvaherald.com along with the entry information that appears on the entry blank. You can also drop a CD by The Sylva Herald Office with an entry blank accompanying it.

4. Any entries without the complete information will NOT be accepted.

Deadline for submission of photos is

Thursday, April 19, at 5 p.m.

Any and all questions regarding the contest should be e-mailed to

photos@thesylvaherald.com or call 828-586-2611 x310.
