SM soccer team battles to tie with Lady Patriots

Smoky Mountain and Madison battled to a 1-1 tie in non-conference soccer action Friday at Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field.

Terra Mileti scored for the Lady Mustangs (2-0-1) in the 65th minute with an assist from Chelsea Parham.

Madison’s Sara Wyatt tied it with an unassisted goal 10 minutes later.

“This was a positive performance by our squad though it was far from being perfect,” Coach Stephaen Delor said. “Madison went three games deep in the state playoffs last year and came in ranked eighth in the state. Our girls did not get intimidated and played them toe-to-toe the whole game. We even had a chance to win the game at the very end with a breakaway, but our shot went straight to their goalkeeper.”

SM took eight shots to six by the Lady Patriots. Shandi Young made four saves for the Lady Mustangs, and Madison’s Christina Ponder had six.

“I liked the way our team responded when Madison tied the game with five minutes left,” Delor said. “It shows great character. Our team kept fighting and nearly scored the go ahead goal.”
