The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Former Sylva businessman, Raymon Stovall, dies at 96

Raymon Stovall, 96, of Allen Henson Circle, Sylva, died Tuesday, March 13, 2007, at Skyland Care Center, after a period of declining health.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at Sylva First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Paul Christy officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Brad Brown, Kevin Brown, Julie Lauver, Tommy Stovall, Phil Stovall and David Stovall. Honorary pallbearers will be Ben Alsberg and Will Stovall.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.

A native of Cleveland, Ga., he had lived in Jackson County since 1946 and was the last surviving child of the late John and Georgia Stovall. A retired Sylva businessman, he operated Stovall’s 5 & 10 for 22 years. A member of Sylva First United Methodist Church for 61 years, he was active in United Methodist Men and the adult Sunday school class and held many church offices. He was an avid sports fan and devoted supporter of athletics at Western Carolina University, where he was a longtime member of the Catamount Club. He was also an active member of the Sylva Lions Club, where he held several offices.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ezra Smith Stovall, who died in 2000.

Surviving are two daughters, Lynda Brown of Greenville, S.C., and Jan Stovall of Tacoma Park, Md.; one son, John David Stovall of Asheville; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to WestCare Hospice, 132 Sylva Plaza, Sylva, NC 28779; or Sylva First United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Doris Clark

Doris Barbara Hardin Clark, 71, of Andrews, died Saturday, March 10, 2007, after a lengthy illness.

Services were scheduled to be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, with the Revs. Chris Rumfelt and Ronnie Crisp officiating. Burial was to be in Valleytown Cemetery.

Pallbearers were to be Shaun Swinney, Allen Fauscett, Larrie Thomas, Nathaniel Barton, Waylon Coffey, and Michael Booth. Honorary pallbearers were to be George Swinney and Gary Minor.

A native of Cherokee County, she was a daughter of the late Gay Astor and Lola Jo Ellis Hardin. She was a sewing machine operator at Owenby Manufacturing in Andrews, and enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing, and music. She was a member of Beaver Creek Freewill Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Linda Hardin; and three brothers, Glen C. Hardin, Moss Hardin and Ronnie Hardin.

Surviving are her husband, Arnold Andrew Clark; five daughters, Joan Swinney and Pam Rymer, both of Dalton, Ga., Joyce Thomas McCullen of Gastonia, Becky Minor of Chatsworth, Ga., and Violet Marlowe of Marion; one son, James Barton of Jacksonville, Fla.; two brothers, Bob Hardin of Andrews and Steve Hardin of Sylva; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Merle Whigham

Merle Whiddon Whigham, 90, of Sylva, formerly of Havana, Fla., died Thursday, March 8, 2007.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 13, in the chapel of Ivey Funeral Home in Bainbridge, Ga.

She was born Jan. 17, 1917, in Decatur County, Ga. She was a homemaker and a member of Salem United Methodist Church in Havana.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin O. Whigham; three children, Leon Whigham, Terry Whigham and Annette W. Burns; one brother, Roy Whiddon; one sister, Sarah W. Parker; and one granddaughter.

Surviving are seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Virginia Farmer

Virginia Farmer, 75, of Wildcat Mountain Road, Sylva, died Tuesday, March 13, 2007, at Harris Regional Hospital, after a period of declining health.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Thursday, March 15) at Fairview Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Tommy James officiating.

A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Paul E. and Rena Messer Burgess. She had lived in Jackson County since 1966.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold “Red” Farmer, who died in 2002.

Surviving are two daughters, Brenda Cloer of Cullowhee and Sandra Hamilin of Canton; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Reba Brooks

Reba Jones Brooks, 84, of Whittier, died Sunday, March 11, 2007, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center, after a period of declining health.

Graveside services were scheduled to be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, in Fairview Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Gary Maney officiating.

A daughter of the late Jehu Thomas Jones and Buena Brown Jones, she was a member of Worldwide Church of God in Asheville. She retired from Mountain Projects, where she worked as a teacher’s aide, and enjoyed flower gardening and reading.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Cleo Jones; and two brothers, Ira Jones and Felix Jones.

Surviving are three sons, Roger Brooks and Albert Jones, both of Sylva, and Doug Brooks of Clyde; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Elzina Bradley

Elzina T. Bradley, 89, of Tooni Branch, Cherokee, died Tuesday, March 6, 2007, at Tsali Care Center, after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 8, at Rock Springs Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Revs. Bo Parris and Jim “Bo” Sneed officiating. Burial was in the family cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was the last surviving child of the late Ammons and Lucinda Welch Tramper.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Bradley, who died in 1997; one son, Henry Bradley; and two daughters, Doris Queen and Bessie Owle.

Surviving are three daughters, Elsie Maldonado of Washington and Sarah Bradley and Sharon Littlejohn, both of Cherokee; three sons, Richard Youngdeer, Fred Bradley, Jr. and Homer Bradley, all of Cherokee; 29 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

John Owen

John Edward Owen, 84, of Rosman, died Wednesday, March 7, 2007, at Transylvania Community Hospital.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at Wolf Mountain Baptist Church, with the Revs. Ralph Pressley, Ben Owen and Devon Owen officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, he was a son of the late Elija and Jerda Galloway Owen.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nellie Owen, who died in 1964; one daughter, Genevive Owen; two sisters, Pearlene Davis and Ardell Morgan; and three brothers, Wayne Owen, Lawrence Owen and Clarence Owen.

Surviving are his wife, Nola Owen; seven daughters, Legonia Galloway of Tuckasegee, Elithia Weinkam, Cathy Parker and Peggy Owen, all of Asheville, Venelle Galloway of Balsam Grove, Susan Church of Travelers Rest, S.C., and Holly Owen of Rosman; five sons, Leon Owen and David Owen, both of Tuckasegee, Devon Owen and Eddie Lee Owen, both of Lake Toxaway, and Larry Owen of Balsam Grove; three stepdaughters, Pat Owen of Lake Toxaway, Jane Gardner of Rosman and Rita London of Hendersonville; two stepsons, Bill McCall of Lake Toxaway and Rick McCall of Rosman; one sister, Lorraine Davis of Pickens, S.C.; 22 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

Margaret Swayney

Margaret Elizabeth Saunooke Swayney, 50, of Cherokee, died Tuesday, March 6, 2007.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 8, at Sequoyah Baptist Church.

Crisp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Lester Fisher

Lester Fisher, 76, of Sylva’s Willets community, died Monday, March 5, 2007, at Harris Regional Hospital, after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 10, at Rocky Branch Freewill Baptist Church in Waynesville, of which he was a member, with the Revs. Gary McCarter, James Mill and Ray Aiken officiating. Burial was in Lower Crawford Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Ryan Wesley McCarter, Jeremy Dean McCarter, Kinsey Scott Mathis, David R. Holder, Mark Shuler and Brandon Worley.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a son of the late Loranzo and Allie Mills Fisher. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and had retired from Lea Industries.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lora Hensley Fisher, who died in 1997; and two sisters, Lucille Shuler and Cora Crawford.

Surviving are two daughters, Janet Fisher McCarter of Rosman and Glenda Sue Woodard of Sylva; four sons, Larry Daniel Parker of Whittier, Cleveland Lee Parker of Massachusetts, Ricky Warren Fisher of Dillsboro, and Thomas Michael Mills of Canton; two brothers, Ernest Fisher and Alvin Fisher, both of Waynesville; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Violet Dillard

Violet Polly Mae Dillard, 65, of Sedro-Woolley, Wash., died Sunday, March 11, 2007, at Seattle Regional Hospital.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, March 15) in Lemley Chapel, with the Rev. Wayne Stiles officiating. Burial will follow at Hamilton Cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, she was born May 10, 1941 to the late Guy and Marie Reece Carpenter. She moved to Skagit County in 1951 and attended schools in Hamilton and Concrete before graduating from Concrete High School in 1959. She was a foster mother for many years, enjoyed roller skating and was an avid wrestling fan. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Burlington, Wash., and lived most of her life in the Skagit Valley.

She was preceded in death by her step-father, Bert Smith.

Surviving are her husband of 48 years, James Dillard; five children, Susan Perry and Bruce Dillard, both of El Centro, Calif., Reba Cabrera and Robin Dillard, both of Sedro-Woolley, and Rose Donnelly of Burlington; one brother, Bascomb “Bud” Carpenter of Mount Vernon, Wash.; and 11 grandchildren.

Wymer Mincey

Wymer L. Mincey, 86, of Cullowhee, died Tuesday, March 13, 2007, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, March 16, at Cullowhee Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Revs. Jeffery and Tonya Vickery officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.

A son of the late Verco Mincey and Ethel Pressley Mincey, he was a member of the Tuckasegee VFW and the American Legion and owner of Mincey Real Estate for 24 years. He was chairman of the Cullowhee Fire Department’s board for several years and also served on the Jackson County Planning Board. From 1938 until 1962, he served in the U.S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer on both an aircraft carrier and the USS Gambier Bay, which sank in Leyte Gulf during World War II. He was awarded several medals, including the Presidential Unit Citation Award. He was an avid outdoorsman.

He was preceded in death by one son, William Augustus Mincey; and one brother, William Clinard Mincey.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Jean Mincey; two daughters, Debra Mincey Cathey of Pace, Fla., and Barbara Mincey Rogers of Houston, Texas; two sons, Jim Mincey and Jack Mincey, both of Cullowhee; two sisters, Sue Allen of Charlotte and Ruth Painter of Lake Junaluska; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Cullowhee Baptist Church Building Fund.

Travis Deitz

Travis Ashely Deitz, 22, of Woodrow Deitz Road, Sylva, died Friday, March 9, 2007, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, with the Revs. Eddie Stillwell and Earl Holden officiating. Burial was in East Fork Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Andrew Cabe, Jay Denton, Brad Stillwell, Brent Allison, Aaron Green, Brandon Hooper and Brandon Bishop.

He was born in Chattanooga, Tenn., and had lived in Stevenson, Ala., before moving to Jackson County three years ago. He was an equipment operator for the past six weeks with Appalachian Log Homes, and had worked at T&S Hardwood for 13 months. He was a 2003 graduate of North Jackson High School in Alabama, where he played trombone in the marching band, and he received his welding certificate from Southwestern Community College. He was an avid outdoorsman and a member of the Savannah Fire Department.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Woodrow Deitz; and his maternal grandparents, Dearl and Irene Cagle Ashe.

Surviving are his parents, Billy Harold and Delaine Ashe Deitz of Stevenson and Sylva; one half-brother, Harold Kevin Deitz of Sylva; and his paternal grandmother, Bonnie Deitz of Sylva.

Margie Christine ‘Chris’ Underwood Pearson

Waynesville - Margie Christine Underwood Pearson, 79, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, March 7, 2007, at Haywood Regional Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family.

A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Charles Edgar and Stella Grant Underwood. At age five, Chris’s birth mother died and Leona, her stepmother, continued to raise her as her mother. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Stanley Underwood.

She was a 1944 graduate of Waynesville Township High School and attended Blanton’s Business College. Mrs. Pearson was a member of First United Methodist Church of Waynesville.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Billy L. Pearson; daughter, Cynthia Ann Turpin and her husband, Philip, of Sylva; two sons, Dennis Edward Pearson and wife, Joan, of Nova Scotia and Terry L. Pearson and his wife, Patricia, of Old Saybrook, Conn.; two sisters, Joyce Reams and her husband, William, and Dolores Caldwell, both of Florida; brother, Donald Underwood and his wife Evelyn, of Candler; two sisters-inlaw, Mary R. Roper and Peggy R. Fugate, of Waynesville; and three grandchildren, Martha A. Turpin, Matthew A. Turpin and Julian D.P. Pearson .

A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

The family received friends prior to the service at the funeral home.
