Watts

A pursuit through downtown Sylva has left one man in jail.

Kenneth Ray Watts, 44, of Gainesville, Ga., was arrested March 7 after leading authorities on a chase through parts of Dillsboro and Sylva.

According to Capt. Steve Lillard with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, the March 7 chase began after Deputy Shawn Price stopped Watts in Dillsboro.

The car Watts was driving matched the description of one that drove off without paying for gas in Macon County. Upon inspection, Price discovered the car had been reported stolen. At that point Watts sped off, driving towards Sylva, Lillard said.

After speeding down West Main Street toward Sylva, Watts turned on Keener Street. He lost control of his vehicle near the old Courthouse and ran off the road on Ridgeway Street.

Watts was taken into custody and remains in jail under a $21,000 bond. He is charged with habitual impaired driving, fleeing to elude arrest, assault on an officer, driving while license revoked, reckless driving, speeding, possession of a stolen vehicle and resisting a public officer. He also has an outstanding warrant in Georgia.
