Crain leads Black Hawks to victory over Mustangs

David Crain struck out 14 batters and hit a home run leading North Buncombe to an 11-2 non-conference baseball victory at Smoky Mountain last Thursday.

Crain pitched a five-hitter and walked no one.

“They came to play, and we didn’t,” Coach Marvin Schade said.

The Black Hawks jumped in front 4-0 in the first thanks in part to Crain’s two-run homer.

A couple of errors helped them up the margin to 7-0 in the second.

The Mustangs (2-3) got on the board in the bottom of the second when Grant Schallock singled and later scored on an error.

North scored twice in the fourth and picked up single runs in the fifth and sixth for an 11-1 margin.

SM kept the game from ending on the 10-run rule in the bottom of the sixth when Schallock doubled and came home on Trey Franks’ single.

Schallock had three hits in three at-bats making him seven-for-seven in the last two games.

Daniel Buchanan (1-1) took the loss.

The Mustang JVs are 2-2 after a 13-3 win at North. The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

“It was a total team effort,” Coach Ron Watson said. “We got good pitching, excellent defense and timely hitting. It felt good to play so well against them after playing so poorly against them the first time.”

Adam Henson pitched a three-hitter and struck out seven.

Chris Matthews had three hits, including a triple, while Henson, Dakota Meadows and Matt Nicholson all had two hits.

Left fielder Ronnie Mau and shortstop Meadows were cited for their defense.
