Clarke sets record in year’s first track meet

Smoky Mountain’s track teams opened their seasons Friday in a 10-school meet at West Henderson.

The women finish eighth while the men placed ninth.

“We did pretty well overall,” Coach Michael McIntosh said. “I try looking it at from a conference standpoint. In that case we would have finished third and fourth. A lot of our places would have gone a long way up in the conference.”

Travis Clarke had SM’s best finish as he broke his own school record by placing second in the 300-meter hurdles in 42.77 and met the regional qualifying time.

Others placing for the men were:

Long jump – Rodney McCormick, fifth, 18-7.5.

Triple jump – Jonathan Tannehill, fifth, 31-10; McCormick, seventh, 37-5.5.

Discus – Jesse Brooks, seventh, 99-55.5.

Shot put – Brooks, seventh, 37-8.75.

3,200 relay – Adam Ray, Josh Seay, Brandon Norris and Zach O’Halleran, sixth, 10:14.74.

800 run – Ray, seventh, 2:16.61.

Long jump – Katie Spiro, seventh, 13-7.5.

3,200 relay – Cadence Railsback, Laura Ward, Emily Butcher and Sarah Thomas, fifth, 12:30.66.

100 dash – Ali Taylor, sixth, 13.89.

800 relay – Taylor, Karenda Franklin, Amanda Barnes and Spiro, sixth, 2:03.86.

1,600 run – Railsback, third, 6:51.38.

800 run – Railsback, fourth, 2:53.31.a

200 dash – Spiro, fourth, 28.99; Taylor, sixth, 29.95.

“A lot of them can do a lot better, but several of the freshmen did well,” McIntosh said.
