Parham

A Jackson County Grand Jury has indicted a Mooresville man in connection with the December shooting death of a Western Carolina University student.

Brandon Claude Parham, 22, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of 20-year-old Andrew Keith Sides, who died of a single gunshot wound, according to Capt. Steve Lillard of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Jimmy Ashe said in December that Sides’ death was not a suicide and that charges might be forthcoming.

Sides’ body was discovered around 5:30 a.m. Dec. 2 when deputies and emergency medical personnel were dispatched to Catamount Suites, a student apartment complex located off Ledbetter Road in Cullowhee. Ashe indicated a few days later that a second individual was involved.

Lillard said Tuesday that evidence collected at the scene and analyzed by the State Bureau of Investigation led to the charge against Parham, who was a friend of Sides.

“It was obvious the wound was not self-inflicted,” Lillard said.

Parham was arrested Feb. 27 and was released later that day on a $7,500 bond.
