The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Leonard Huskey

Leonard H. Huskey, 74, of Maryville, Tenn., died Thursday, March 1, 2007, at his residence.

Private services will be held at a later date.

A native of Rockford, Tenn., he was a son of the late Iva and Clarence Huskey. He was a member of Broadway Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Navy Reserves. He was a Mason and a graduate of Everett High School, and had retired from Lowe’s in 1994.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Cochran Huskey, and one brother, Wayne Huskey.

Surviving are one son, James Huskey of Charlotte; one daughter, Teresa Chastain of Maryville; two sisters, Alice Pearson of Maryville and Evelyn Moffitt of Columbus, Ga.; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Blount Memorial Hospice, 1095 E. Lamar Alexander Pkwy., Maryville, TN 37804-9910.

Smith Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.



Savannah Cook

Savannah Darlene Cook, 47, of Fauline Enloe Road, Cherokee, died Monday, Feb. 26, 2007, at Cherokee Indian Hospital, after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 2, at Macedonia Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Revs. Bo Parris and Steve Gunter officiating. Burial was in Manley George Family Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Lloyd Owle, Edd Owle, Steve Sutton, David Bushyhead, Todd Taylor and Jim Owle.

A native of Swain County, she had lived most of her life in Jackson County and was a daughter of the late Will Thomas and Addie Edna George Littlejohn.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Thomas Dean Littlejohn.

Surviving are four daughters, April Taylor and Amber Justice, both of Cherokee, and Marlene Cook and Vickie Cook, both of Bushnell, Fla.; one son, Adam Cook of Bushnell; and five grandchildren.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Carl Holland

Carl V. Holland, 67, of Mill Creek Road, Cullowhee, died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2007, at his residence, after a period of declining health.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 2, in the Pine Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Johnny Norris officiating.

Pallbearers were Neil Ammons, Patrick Holland, John Moss, Billy Messer, Jeffery Stewart and Jerry Nicholson.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a son of the late Harry and Ruth Watson Holland. He owned and operated Holland Grading for 33 years.

Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Nettie Jean Middleton Holland; one daughter, Carlene Knighten of Cullowhee; one son, Gregg Holland of Cullowhee; one sister, Frankie Jean Webb of Walhalla, S.C.; one brother, Mack Holland of Cullowhee; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to the Pine Creek Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Lester Fisher

Lester Fisher, of Sylva’s Willets community, died Monday, March 5, 2007, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.



Faye Zachary

Faye Buchanan Zachary, 83, of Cullowhee, died Wednesday, Feb. 28.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 3, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Powell officiating. Burial was in East LaPorte Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Roger Hamilton, David Zachary, Mike Parris, Tim Parris, Todd Snyder and Chan Phillips.

A native of Webster, she was a daughter of the late Docia Stillwell Buchanan and Canler Buchanan. She was a graduate of Webster High School. She worked until her retirement at Ford Motor Company as a quality control inspector in Madison Heights, Mich., before returning to Cullowhee in 1988.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jefferson Davis Zachary; one son, Stephen Zachary; three sisters, Lucille Jacobs, Pauline Ekenrod and Iona Cristilaw; and two brothers, Marshall Buchanan and Kenneth Buchanan.

Surviving are two sons, Kenneth Zachary and Ronald Zachary; one sister, Edith Crisp; her twin brother, Ray Buchanan; two grandsons and two great-grandsons.

Memorials may be made to the East LaPorte Cemetery Fund, c/o Dennis Hamilton, P.O. Box 442, Pisgah Forest, NC 28768.



Rev. Robert Dean

The Rev. Robert Cecil Dean, 92, of Hayes Cove Road, Leicester, formerly of Jackson County, died Friday, March 2, 2007, at J.F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center in Asheville.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 4, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, with the Revs. Frank Brooks and Randy Hyatt officiating. Burial was held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 5, in Fairview Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Allen Dean, Jeff Dean, Jason Dean, Kyle Carroll, Jody Wood and Robert Lee Dills.

A resident of Buncombe County since 1945, he was a son of the late Rev. David Adam and Sina Rosetta Bryson Dean. He had worked as a carpenter to help build 17 churches in the region, including Black Mountain Baptist Church and Sols Creek Baptist Church, and was a Baptist minister for 56 years. He was the oldest member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church and presided over the Newfound Community’s death benefit fund.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruie Shuler Dean, who died in 1994; one sister, Lois Nizio; and one brother, Sam Dean.

Surviving are his wife of 11 years, Viola Hawkins Dean; one daughter, Rosa D. Carroll of Snellville, Ga.; one son, Kenneth R. Dean of Candler; one sister, Betty Abernathy of Georgia; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church or to the Leicester Fire Department.

Phyllis Andretti

Phyllis Paciello Andretti, 63, of Sylva, died Saturday, March 3, 2007, after a period of declining health.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, March 8) in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

A native of Italy, she was a daughter of the late Giuseppe Paciello and Giuseppina Turco Paciello. She enjoyed music, crocheting and knitting.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Surviving are two daughters, Giovanna Gallagher and Linda Andretti; one sister, Clara Paciello; and three grandchildren.



Virginia Morgan

Virginia Collins Morgan, 81, of U.S. 441 South, Sylva, died Sunday, March 4, at her residence, after a period of declining health.

Services were scheduled to be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ron Allen officiating. Burial was to be in Zion Hill Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late George W. and Ella Cochran Collins. She was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J.D. Morgan, who died in 1983; one sister, Ann Hoskins; and three brothers, Vance Collins, Wiley Collins and Jess Collins.

Surviving are one daughter, Judy Morgan Smith of Sylva; one son, Johnny Morgan of Atlanta, Ga.; one brother, Bill Collins of Sylva; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.



Theodore Gillman

Theodore Robert Gillman, 78, of Sylva, died Friday, March 2, 2007, at his residence, after a long illness.

Services were scheduled to be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home, with visitation immediately following the service.

A native of Augusta, Ga., he was a son of the late William Thomas and Ruth Womack Gillman. He was a veteran of the Korean War, where he served with the Army Air Corps in Korea and Japan. He worked 34 years as a communication engineer for Southern Bell until his retirement in 1989, after graduating from the University of Georgia.

Surviving are his wife, Linda Gillman; five daughters, Melony Barrett, Julie Barrett, Lisa Little, Robin Darnell and Ami Gates; two sons, Clark Whitten and Michael Gillman; and 10 grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the United Fund of Jackson County, P.O. Box 897, Sylva, NC 28779, or to Hospice of Jackson County, 132 Sylva Plaza, Sylva, NC 28779.



Elzina Bradley

Elzina Bradley, of Cherokee, died Tuesday, March 6, 2007, at Tsali Care Center.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.



Jack Hipps

Jack L. Hipps, 77, of Chinquapin Cove, Whittier, died unexpectedly Saturday, March 3, 2007, at Swain Medical Center.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, with the Rev. Eddie Stillwell officiating. Burial was in Olivet Methodist Church Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Steve Youngdeer VFW Post 8013, of which he was a member.

Pallbearers were Ronnie Henderson, Jim Mills, Larry Dixon, Oris Hughes, Kenneth Miller and Raymond Grant.

A native of Jackson County, where he had lived most of his life, he was the son of the late Lucius Alexander and Mamie Ruth Morgan Hipps. An avid fly fisherman and hiker, he had retired from Drexel as the personnel director and attended Victory Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Korea, and was also a member of the Coast Guard.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Karen Sue Hipps; and two sisters, Ruth Bradley and Alice Terrell.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Marilyn McDonald Hipps; two daughters, Joyce Carbonneau and Sandra Ballew, both of Maryville, Tenn.; and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Victory Baptist Church, 2175 Fontana Rd., Bryson City, NC 28713.



Ollie Conner

Ollie Ledford Plaster Conner, 90, of Allens Branch Road, Sylva, died Monday, March 5, 2007, at Skyland Care Center, after an extended illness.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, March 8) in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Harris officiating. Burial will be in Gunter Cemetery.

The family was scheduled to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Joe Conner, Owen Conner, Jackie Bowers, David Plaster, Phillip Plaster and Derek Plaster.

A native of Jackson County, where she had lived most of her life, she was a daughter of the late Jerry and Molly Wykle Ledford. She was a member of Wayside Baptist Church and was an avid gardener, quilter and canner.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, John Plaster, and her second husband, Ben Conner; two sons, Bill Plaster and Paul Plaster; one daughter, Azaleah Plaster; six brothers, Harley, General, Bill, Glen, Jimmy and Ray Ledford; and four sisters, Vinnie Wyatt, Carrie Ruff, Annie Ledford and Betty Ledford.

Surviving are two daughters, Kathy Bowers and Mae Tolley, both of Sylva; four sons, Owen Plaster and Jerry Conner, both of Sylva, Joe Conner of Cullowhee and James Conner of Alaska; two sisters, Helen Connor and Nell Parris, both of Sylva; 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
