Moratorium vote may come tonight

By Lynn Hotaling

After weeks of controversy, county officials’ proposed subdivision moratorium may come to a vote during tonight’s (Thursday) 6 p.m. commissioners meeting in Courtroom 1 at the Justice Center.

County leaders initially indicated that a vote would come at the conclusion of last week’s public hearing but instead postponed the decision until their next meeting.

Both supporters and opponents of the proposed freeze on new subdivision construction have been vocal. Turnout at the hearing was estimated at some 1,300, and The Herald has received record numbers of letters to the editor on the topic.

Proponents say such a moratorium is needed to rein in fast-paced growth while a subdivision ordinance is developed; those against the move say a ban on new subdivisions would stall Jackson County’s economy.
