Lady Mustangs rally for softball victory

Jessica Cabe and Jodi Henkel drove in runs in the sixth inning, and Chelsea Elders made a game-saving catch in the seventh as Smoky Mountain took a 3-2 non-conference softball win on Feb. 28 at North Buncombe.

Megan Taylor pitched a four-hitter. She struck out 10 and walked two.

“Coming back from a 2-0 deficit late in the game to win was huge,” Coach Tony Quinn said. “Megan pitched very well, and Jessica and Jodi had big hits. Chelsea made an outstanding defensive play. The defense played well and did a good job backing up our pitcher.”

The Lady Mustangs (1-1) trailed 2-0 entering the sixth when Trish Brooks walked and Cassie Randall singled. With two out, Cabe had an RBI single scoring pinch runner Heather Mathis, and the tying run came home on an error as Cabe took third. She scored on Henkel’s infield hit for a 3-2 SM lead.

The Lady Hawks put the first two runners on in the seventh with a walk and a single. They were at second and third with two out when Elders snared a line drive at third base to end the game.

The contest was a pitching duel between Taylor and North’s Ashley Wilson, who also struck out 10. She gave up six hits and three walks.

The Lady Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the third on Ali Hensley’s two-run single with two out.
