Franklin defeats SM with big fifth inning
Franklin scored seven runs in the fifth inning to rally for a 9-4 softball win over Smoky Mountain in the season opener Feb. 26 at Franklin.
“We played great except for the fifth inning,” said Tony Quinn, who was coaching his first game for the Lady Mustangs. “We addressed in practice some of the things that happened in the fifth inning.”
The Lady Panthers put together five hits in the frame to go with two walks and a crucial three-base error to overcome a 4-1 deficit. Jillian Barrett singled twice in the inning, and Brandi Yokley had a double. Brianna Bishop and Ashley Banther both contributed singles.
Franklin picked up another run in the sixth.
SM jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first off Franklin starter Megan Fouts. Miriam Brown singled and scored on Megan Taylor’s double. An error allowed another run to score before Cassie Randall singled and later came home on Haven Stephens’ base hit.
Kayla Talent tripled and scored on Samantha Ledford’s single cutting the gap to 3-1 in the bottom of the first.
The Lady Mustangs made it 4-1 in the top of the fifth when Heather Mathis waked and was driven in on Taylor’s single.
Taylor pitched the first three innings before moving to first base due to illness. She was replaced by Trish Brooks.
Barrett and Talent both had two hits for the Lady Panthers.
Brown and Taylor led the SM offense with two hits apiece.
