Errors help Asheville top Smoky Mountain
Asheville took advantage of five errors to score five runs in the fifth inning en route to an 8-4 victory over Smoky Mountain at the SM field.
“It was a good game until we had that bad inning and made a bunch of errors,” Coach Marvin Schade said. “It wasn’t one person. We fielded a lot of grounds balls in practice the last couple of days.”
Demo Sawyer pitched four innings for the win. Will McMillian went the last three for the save. They combined to limit the Mustangs (1-2) to three hits.
The Cougars scored with the help of an error in the second, but SM’s Mitch Mincey tied it with a home run in the bottom of the frame.
Cory Southworth had an RBI single in the third as Asheville went up 3-1.
The disastrous fifth inning allowed the Cougars to extend the margin to 8-1.
The Mustangs scored three times in the seventh on Daniel Buchanan’s two-run triple and Jesse Henkel’s sacrifice fly.
Josh Ammons (0-1) took the loss although Schade said he pitched well in his four innings.
Southworth led the Cougar offense with two hits.
The JV game was rained out.
