Brooks fires one-hitter as SM defeats Asheville

Freshman Trish Brooks fired a one-hitter in her first high school pitching start as Smoky Mountain defeated Asheville 11-0 Friday at Webster.

The game was called after four and a half innings due to the 10-run rule.

Brooks allowed a single in the third inning. She struck out 11 and walked three.

“She started out with a couple of walks, but then she settled down and struck out the side,” Coach Tony Quinn said. “She gained more confidence as the game went along.”

The Lady Mustangs (2-1) scored all the runs they needed in the first inning. Miriam Brown and Ashlee Stephens walked and moved up on a passed ball. Infield outs by Megan Taylor and Brooks drove in the runs.

Raven Campbell walked in the second and advanced on a steal and passed ball before scoring on Jodi Henkel’s infield out making it 3-0.

Taylor had an RBI double in the second and scored on a passed ball for a 5-0 advantage.

Four errors helped lead to six runs in the fourth. Taylor had a two-run single, and Stephens also had a base hit in the frame. Cassie Randall drove in a run with an infield out.

Taylor had two hits in two at-bats.

Quinn credited a crew from the Jackson County Recreation and Parks Department with getting the field in playing shape after rain the previous day and night.

“The field looked the best it had looked since we started using it a month ago,” he said. “We appreciate all the stuff the county did for us.”
