Basket-making workshop to be March 25 at Heritage Center
Western Carolina University’s Mountain Heritage Center will offer a basket-making workshop with Cherokee basketmaker Katrina Maney from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 25.
The workshop is being held in conjunction with the exhibit “Cherokee Baskets and Their Makers,” which is on display at the museum through April.

Registration deadline for the workshop is Monday, March 12. Participants can purchase a white oak wall basket kit, with all materials included, for $45.
Maney was born in Swain County and raised in the Birdtown community on the Qualla Boundary. She began weaving baskets at age 14, learning from her mother, well-known basketmaker Emma Taylor. In addition to teaching classes in basketry and selling her baskets through Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual Inc., Maney demonstrates at the Oconaluftee Indian Village and at elementary schools in the region.
The exhibit “Cherokee Baskets and Their Makers” features more than 100 baskets on loan from regional collectors. Another special program planned in conjunction with the exhibit is “The Connoisseurship of Collecting: Cherokee Baskets” from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 29.
