Then and now
Robert Bryson of Sylva supplied this week’s photo of Sylva Elementary School’s 1936 seventh-grade class, and he had all the names written down when he brought it by The Herald office. His late wife, the former Melita Fox, was a member of the class. Those pictured include Jimmy McClain, Elsie Hyatt, Dorothy Queen, Grace Lloyd, Virginia Clark, Dorothy Warren, Irene Paxton, Willa Mae Clemmons, Homer Franklin, Melita Fox, Daisy Frady, Maggie Allison, Patty Wilson, Janette Queen, Geraldine Price, Mildred Sumner, Kathleen McGinnis, Hadley Kilpatrick, Winne Mae Beasley, Joe Deitz, Ethel Wiseman, R.L. Glenn, Nellie Fox, J. C. Dillard, Bobby Hall, Glenn Dillard, Thelma Monteith, Pearl Henson, Ruth Deitz, Bonnie Estes, Ernest Jamison, and Alliney Bryson, teacher and principal. The Sylva Herald publishes either a “Then and Now” or “Back Then” feature on a weekly basis. Readers who have photos taken in Jackson County that are at least 25 years old and include a recognizable feature (such as an existing building, highway, mountaintop or ridgeline) are invited to submit them for use in “Then and Now.” Other interesting photos will be considered for “Back Then.” Photos can be dropped off or mailed to the newspaper office. As a convenience to those who would prefer not to let their cherished photos out of their sight, Herald photographer Nick Breedlove will scan photos Tuesday and Wednesday mornings between 10 and 11 a.m. Those with questions about potential “Then and Now” or “Back Then” photos may contact Breedlove at 586-2611, ext. 310, or nick@thesylvaherald.com. |
