Bessie Carr Nations, county’s oldest resident, dies at 104
Bessie Carr Nations, 104, of Shope Creek Road, Whittier, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center.
Services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, with the Revs. Larry Nations and Clifford Willis officiating. Burial was at Union Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Hubert Myers, George Rogers, C.W. Ogle, Mike Lovelace, Robert Metcalf, Derek Tilley, Lynn Flemming, Shane Cooper, and Tommy Brooks.
A native of Sevier County, Tenn., she was a daughter of the late John and Sarah Newman Carr. A member of Whittier Baptist Church, she had lived in Jackson County since 1937 and at the time of her death was believed to be the county’s oldest resident.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James L. Nations, who died in 1980; two daughters, Flora Nations and Charlotte Nations; nine brothers and sisters and four half-brothers and half-sisters.
Surviving are three daughters, Geneva Garrett of Greer, S.C., Mary Helen Evrett of Oolte, Tenn., and Frankie Sheehan of Whittier; one son, Weldon Nations of Whittier; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 18 great-great-grandchildren, and one great-great-great-grandchild.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Flora Hartline
Flora Groner Hartline, 88, of Cherokee, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, at Tsali Care Nursing Center, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Services were held Saturday, Jan. 27, at Crain Funeral Home in Dongola, Ill. Burial was at Cypress Cemetery in Illinois.
She was born January 9, 1919, to the late Tell and Cora Groner. She enjoyed gospel music, gardening and birdwatching, and was an active member of Baptist churches in Cypress, Ill., Largo, Fla., and Maggie Valley.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn “Buck” Hartline, who died in 1991; and one sister, Eileen Earnhart.
Surviving are three sons, Jerry Hartline and Harold Hartline, both of Cherokee, and Larry Hartline of Maggie Valley; one brother, Howard Groner of Perks, Ill.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.
James Fowler
James Lyman Fowler, 82, of Myrtle Creek, Ore., died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007.
Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, at Mountain View Memorial Chapel in Myrtle Creek, with Pastor John Gustafson officiating. Burial followed at the Canyonville IOOF Cemetery.
He was born in Glenville on Sept. 14, 1924, to the late James and Carrie Finley Fowler. He was raised and attended school in North Carolina before entering the U.S. Army in 1943. After being discharged in 1945, he moved to California in 1953 before settling in Myrtle Creek in 1963. He had worked as a dry chain puller in a sawmill and enjoyed mechanic and carpenter work, old cars, and fishing.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Sturlin Fowler and Randall Fowler; one brother, Marshall Fowler; and four sisters, Pearl Fowler, Virginia Fowler, Lois Fowler and Dell Fowler.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Ruby Fisher Fowler; one daughter, Jan Myers of Roseburg, Ore.; four sons, Burlin Fowler, Larry Fowler, and Craig Fowler, all of Myrtle Creek, and Wayne Fowler of Marysville, Wash.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Hixie Arnoldt
Hixie Ashe Sunde Arnoldt, of Sitka, Alaska, formerly of Sylva’s Old Savannah community, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, at Sitka Community Hospital.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, Jan. 24, at the Sitka Community Cemetery. Memorial services were held Thursday, Jan. 25, at the Sitka Lutheran Church.
She was born in the Greens Creek community and graduated from Webster High School. After attending Western Carolina Teachers’ College, she taught at View Point Elementary School before moving to Winston-Salem, where she worked for the Chatham Blanket Factory. She worked for the U.S. Government during World War II before returning to Cullowhee, where she finished her education degree. She then taught in the Big Cove school near Cherokee. In 1955, she moved to Sitka and continued teaching until her retirement.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ole Sunde; her second husband, Charles Arnoldt; four sisters, Gazelle Henson, Vivian Henson, Clara Tomblin and Blanche Miller; and four brothers, Gerald Ashe, Dearl Ashe, Thomas Ashe and Zeb Ashe.
Surviving are four step-children and several nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the Old Savannah Cemetery Fund, the Sitka Community Hospital or a charity of one’s choice.
Robert Nolan
Robert Nolan, 66, of Sylva, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007.
No services are planned at this time.
He was the son of the late Edward Nolan, Sr., and Dorothy Taylor. He worked as a heavy equipment operator and was an antique car club enthusiast.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Phillip Nolan.
Surviving are his son, Edward Nolan of Battle Creek, Mich.; and one granddaughter.
Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Berdina Crowe
Berdina Sarah Powell Crowe, 75, of Cherokee’s Yellowhill community, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, at Cherokee Baptist Church.
Crisp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Paula Calaway
Paula Kelly Williams Calaway, 64, of Cullowhee, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2007.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today (Thursday, Feb. 1) at First Baptist Church in Franklin.
The family was scheduled to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Macon Funeral Home.
