On his way to winning a two-mile race in Cullowhee in 1974, West Georgia runner Jim Gaines (top photo) saw a different landscape than the one that now surrounds Western Carolina University’s track (lower photo). Back then N.C. 107 had not been relocated to the northwest end of campus where it runs today (visible in background of lower photo) and Long Branch Road (now Little Savannah Road) began on campus and crossed Cullowhee Creek to a residential area. The new portion of N.C. 107, which opened around 1980, allowed WCU to develop a new main entrance with more convenient access. Runners in the early 1970s also lacked a fieldhouse (right in lower photo), which was added in 2005 when the track was resurfaced. – Photo by Lynn Hotaling (top) and Herald photo by Nick Breedlove
