American Spiritual Ensemble to bring ‘Ol’ Time Religion’ to WCU
Western Carolina University’s Fine and Performing Arts Center will continue its “Galaxy of Stars: Legends on Stage” series with a performance of classical African-American spirituals on Thursday, Feb. 1, at 7:30 p.m.
Performing for the evening is the American Spiritual Ensemble, a group of singers who travel worldwide to perform classic spirituals and Broadway numbers. The group will be celebrating Black History Month at WCU by performing a collection of Negro spirituals titled “Ol’ Time Religion.”
The ensemble was founded in 1995 by Everett McCorvey, professor of voice and director of opera at the University of Kentucky. In addition, McCorvey spends his summers as a member of the artist faculty at the American Institute of Musical Study in Graz, Austria.
The American Spiritual Ensemble will perform African-American spirituals at Western Carolina University’s Fine and Performing Arts Center Thursday, Feb. 1, at 7:30 p.m. as part of the university’s “Galaxy of Stars: Legends on Stage” series.
The group is known to audiences all over the world, and many of its members have performed at the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Houston Grand Opera, San Francisco Opera, Boston Opera and the Atlanta Civic Opera.
Advance tickets for the Feb. 1 performance are recommended. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for senior citizens ages 60 and older, $20 for WCU faculty and staff, and $5 for students. Group rates also are available.

Sunday, April 15 – “Amadeus,” a performance by the Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada, 3 p.m.
Friday, April 27 – The Capitol Steps, a group of former Senate staffers performing political satire, 7:30 p.m.
