WE RECEIVED AN UNUSUAL REQUEST this week from a man named Christopher Lunz. Based on what he says is the false testimony of one person, Lunz has been convicted of murder in Florida. However, Lunz says he was in North Carolina in March 2003, the time of the murder, with a family named Swisher – Steve and Lori Swisher and their children. Lunz claims he took members of the Swisher family to a monster truck show at Western Carolina University about March 8, 2003, and he’s looking for anyone with photos of the event that might help him prove his case. He and the Swishers were sitting near the tunnel where the trucks came out. The Swishers have corroborated his story, but authorities want more proof, Lunz says. Anyone with photos or video from that event that shows the tunnel area is asked to contact his sister, Jennifer Lunz, at 631-2422.

LAST WEEK’S “BACK THEN” PHOTO yielded a call from the teacher in the picture, Arline Evans of Asheville, and an e-mail identification of most of the students from Kathy Jamison McConnell (third from left in front row). According to McConnell, those she recognized in her fourth-grade photo (1962-63 school year) include: (first row, from left) Randy Jones, Johnny Mathis, Kathy Jamison, Beverly Brady, Lora Gail Oliver and Wanda Beck. (The next child is cut off, but Kathy thinks it might be Donna McCracken.) (Second row, from left) Wesley Queen, Gary Cowan, Donnie Burrell, Evelyn Rochester, Clifford Parker, Sandy Jamison, Patsy Clayton and a boy Kathy didn’t recognize. (Third row, from left) Linda Gibson, Brenda Clark, Mike Buchanan, James Gregory, two boys Kathy didn’t recognize, Drucilla Dillard and Judy Denton. “I hope someone can identify those three boys I didn’t know,” Kathy wrote. “Thanks for printing the picture – I didn’t have a copy of it.” Lloyd Cowan loaned the photo to The Herald.
