The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Melba Saunooke

Melba Arkansas Smith Saunooke, 61, of Whitewater Drive, Cherokee, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2006, at Cherokee Indian Hospital, after an extended illness.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Cherokee Chapel, with Brother Lee Jenks officiating. Burial was in the family cemetery.

A native of Swain County, she was a daughter of the late Philip and Kate Sneed Arkansas. She lived most of her life in Jackson County and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Buddy Arkansas and J.P. Arkansas, and one granddaughter.

Surviving are one daughter, Penni Smith of Fort Benning, Ga.; three sons, Philip Brandon Saunooke of Sylva and Joshua Herrell Saunooke and Max Hawke Saunooke, both of Cherokee; one sister, Azalea Arkansas Oocumma of Cherokee; and seven grandchildren.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Estes Tolbert

Estes Tolbert, 94, of Looking Glass Lane, Whittier, died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29, at Hyatt’s Chapel Baptist Church, with the Revs. Dale Rogers, Mike Moore and Steve Webb officiating. Burial was in Thomas Memorial Cemetery.

Pallbearers were grandsons and great-grandsons.

A native of Caldwell County, he was a son of the late Edward Elisha and Martha Estes Tolbert. He had lived most of his life in Jackson County and retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation, where he worked on the bridge crew. He had been a member of Hyatt’s Chapel Baptist Church for more than 50 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Blanton Tolbert, who died Sept. 6, 2006; one son, David Tolbert; four brothers and six sisters.

Surviving are two sons, Glenn Tolbert of Whittier and Ray Tolbert of Panama City, Fla.; one sister, Connie Andrews of Taylorsville; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Hyatt’s Chapel Baptist Church.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Jonah Reed

Jonah Reed, 63, of Cherokee’s Big Y Community, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006, at Cherokee Indian Hospital.

Services were scheduled to be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, at Aquoni Baptist Church, with the Revs. Ed Kilgore and Dan Lambert officiating. Burial was to follow in Reed Family Cemetery with graveside services conducted by the Steve Youngdeer American Legion Post.

A native of Swain County, he was a son of the late Johnson and Dinah Hornbuckle Reed. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and had worked with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. He was a member of Waterfalls Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by one grandson.

Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Eva Tooni Reed; two daughters, Martha Reed and Agnes Reed, both of Cherokee; one son, John Reed of Cherokee; one foster son, Watty Driver, Jr. of Cherokee; one brother, Lawrence Reed of Cherokee; and two grandchildren.

Crisp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Carol McKenzie

Carol Jennings McKenzie, 63, of Cullowhee, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2006.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, at Cullowhee Presbyterian Church.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Ellnora Robinson

Ellnora Robinson, 81, of Kitty Hawk Road, Whittier, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007, at her residence, after a period of declining health.

Services will be held at 4 p.m. today (Thursday, Jan. 4) in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bo Brown officiating. Burial will be in Robinson Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late John and Isabelle Brown Robinson. She was a member of Dicks Creek Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Bernice Lanning, and two brothers, Fred and Roy Robinson.

Several nieces and nephews survive.



Edith Seay

Edith Reed Seay, 87, of Chaparral Drive, Sylva, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, at Mission Hospitals, Memorial Campus in Asheville, after a brief illness.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, at Sylva First United Methodist Church, of which she was a member, with the Rev. Paul Christy officiating. Burial was in Holly Springs Cemetery in Franklin.

Pallbearers were Tommy Seay, David Seay, Robert Seay, Casey Seay, Johnny Wright, Pat Colloetis and Joey Johnson.

A native of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late Garland and Carma Tatham Reed. She had lived in West Virginia for 40 years before returning to Jackson County in 1986. She was a member of the Eastern Star, an avid golfer and a volunteer at Harris Regional Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Seay; one sister, Dorothy Sutton; and one infant brother, Glenn Reed.

Surviving are three sons, C.J. Seay and James Seay, both of Sylva, and Larry Seay of Atlanta, Ga.; one sister, Lucille Cagle of Sylva; one brother, Robert Lyman Reed of Roxboro; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Lora Tramper

Lora Tatum Tramper, 69, of Cherokee’s Big Y Community, died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2006, at her residence.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, at Sequoyah Baptist Church.

Crisp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Wayne Tessner

Wayne Tessner, 43, of Sylva’s Pumpkintown community, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006, at his residence.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home, with the Rev. Benny Bagwell officiating. Burial was in Pumpkintown Cemetery.

He was a son of J.T. Tessner and the late Dolly Louise Johnson. He was a bricklayer and an avid dog breeder and ginseng harvester.

Surviving in addition to his father are his wife, Mary Higdon Tessner; two sons, Jason Tessner of the home and Michael Tessner of Newton; two stepdaughters, Valerie Sutton and Melissa Sutton, both of Sylva; one brother, Ron Tessner of Taylorsville; and two grandchildren.



Weldon Parker

James Weldon Parker, 65, of Dillsboro, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006, in a local nursing home.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 1, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, with the Revs. Eddie Stillwell and Benny Bagwell officiating. Burial was in Locust Field Baptist Church Cemetery.

Born in Tuckasegee on Feb. 5, 1941, he was a construction supervisor who had worked building roads in Jackson County. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of Locust Field Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, Dewey Parker.

Surviving are his mother, Queenie Parker of Tuckasegee; his wife of 37 years, Yvonne S. Parker; two sons, Travis Parker and Chad Parker, both of Sylva; four sisters, June Owen and Diane Huggins, both of Brevard, and Faye Brown and Brenda Messer, both of Tuckasegee; two brothers, Glennon Parker of Brevard and Ronald Parker of Tuckasegee; and three grandchildren.

Deltha Ashe

Deltha Shook Ashe, 89, of Tuckasegee and Ivy Hill Health and Retirement Center in Brevard, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2007.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday, Jan. 4), in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Reid officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Memorial Gardens.

The family was scheduled to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, at the funeral home.

A native of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late John Lee and Mary Elizabeth Shook. She was a member of Tuckasegee Baptist Church, an avid gardener and enjoyed music.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roland Colman Ashe, and one son, Michael Ray Ashe.

Surviving are two daughters, Selma Parker and Ellen Dean Saunders, both of Brevard; three sons, Andrew Roland Ashe of Tuckasegee, Raymond Eddie Ashe of Brevard, and Douglas Lee Ashe of Lexington, S.C.; two brothers, Edward Shook of Brevard and J.C. Shook of Columbus; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Tuckasegee Baptist Church or to the Tuckasegee Wesleyan Church.



Edgar “Ed” Deitz

Edgar “Ed” Deitz, 89, of Marble, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, in a Murphy medical center.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dean Bateman officiating. Burial was in Canyon Road Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Michael Lovingood, Kenneth Higgins, Chad Hall, Jeff Roberson, Ronnie Crisp, and Gary Barnett. Honorary pallbearers were Kendall Barnett, Harold Watkins, and Larry Lovingood.

A native of Jackson County, he was the son of the late Festus and Josephine Jenkins Deitz. He had lived in Cherokee County most of his life, and was a veteran of World War II, where he served in the U.S. Army. He had worked in tunnels for several years and later retired from the Columbia Marble Company. He was a member and deacon of Canyon Road Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Willie Mae Miller Deitz, who died May 15, 1996, and one infant daughter, Edith Louise Deitz.

Surviving are two daughters, Wanda Wilson of Marble and Helen Patton of Hayesville; four sons, Billy Deitz of Etowah, Charles Deitz of Marble, and Fernon Deitz and Edwin Deitz, both of Fontana, Calif.; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchidren.

Toni Walker

Mary Antoinette “Toni” Walker, 45, of Shoal Creek Road, Whittier, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2006.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home, with the Rev. Richard Sneed officiating. Burial was in Union Hill Cemetery.

A native of Philadelphia, Pa., she was a daughter of Christine Crisp Walker of Whittier and the late Thomas Walker. She graduated from Western Carolina University with a degree in communications, and had worked as a disc jockey in several area radio stations. She attended Christ Fellowship Church in Cherokee.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by one sister, Becky Fuller of Whittier; and three brothers, Thomas Walker of Gainesville, Ga., Bill Walker of Murphy and Daniel Walker of Jasper, Tenn.

Bob Stiles

Robert “Bob” Willis Stiles, 93, of Pioneer Village Road, Cherokee, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2007.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, Jan. 4) in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, with Bob Rigdon and Willard Cox officiating.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

He was born April 5, 1913 in Auxvasse, Mo., to the late Ernest Mack and Sybil E. Stiles. He worked as an oil driller in Oklahoma before joining the U.S. Navy, where he served on sub chaser #1349 from Nov. 1, 1942 until his discharge on Oct. 23, 1945. He retired from Yingling Chevrolet Company in Wichita, Kan., on March 15, 1972, and moved to North Carolina that year. He was an avid car enthusiast and a charter member of Woodland Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Surviving is his wife of 64 years, Freda Alley Stiles.
