When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

Oma Smith

Oma Queen Smith, 88, of Brevard, died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006, after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24, in the chapel of Moody-Connolly Funeral Home, with the Revs. Jim Smith, Keith Queen and Steve Jones officiating. A private graveside service was held Saturday, Nov. 25, at Mt. Moriah Cemetery, with the Rev. Tommy Owen officiating.

She was born in Jackson County on Oct. 21, 1918, to the late Rev. Mance and Lular Brown Queen. She had resided in Transylvania County since 1942.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Burgle Queen, Spurgeon Queen, Cecil Queen and Lawrence Queen; and two sisters, Mattie Broom and Annie Louise Queen.

Surviving are her husband of 66 years, Edgar Smith Sr.; one daughter, Frances S. Owen of Brevard, three sons, Harold Smith, Junior Smith and Jimmy Smith, all of Brevard; one brother, Doyle Queen of Balsam Grove; two sisters, Nelin Robinson of Quebec and Minnie Conner of Tuckasegee; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Geneva Thompson

Geneva Naomi Frady Thompson, 84, of Cherokee, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006, after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 27, at Cherokee United Methodist Church with the Revs. Steve Philippi and Don Thurman officiating. Burial followed at Thompson Family Cemetery on Wrights Creek. Pallbearers were grandsons.

She was a daughter of the late Wilburn McDowell Frady and Fanny Gibbs Frady and was a native of Jackson County.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Jeff Thompson; two sons, Dan Thompson and Jerry Thompson; and three brothers, Manuel Frady, Wilburn Frady and Dan Frady.

Surviving are three daughters, Pat Kalonaheskie, Susie Terrell and Libby Climbingbear, all of Cherokee; three sons, Don Thompson and Curt Thompson, both of Cherokee, and Robert Thompson of Albuquerque, N.M.; one sister, Fanny Lou Dermid of Mount Airy; 22 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Robert Robinson

Robert Robinson, 69, of Sylva, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006, at Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.

Harriett Bryson

Harriett Anderson Bryson, 74, of Carefree Lane, Cullowhee, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2006, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday, Nov. 30) at Black Mountain Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Rev. Roger Stewman officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Ridge Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Frankie Dills, Jamie Dills, Ben Bryson, Andrew Bryson, Richard Sitton, and Sonny Bryson.

The family was scheduled to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

A native of Atlanta, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Claude O. and Hattie Spivey Anderson. She had lived in Jackson County for 50 years, and had worked at Western Carolina Telephone Company and as a child care provider at Southwestern Child Development. She was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and had volunteered at Harris Regional Hospital in the gift shop.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Henry Bryson Sr., who died in 1979; two sons, William “Billy” Bryson and Paul Bryson; and one great-granddaughter.

Surviving are two daughters, Laurel Dills of Cullowhee and Barbara B. Sitton of Sylva; three sons, Willie Henry Bryson Jr. and Vincent Bryson, both of Waynesville, and Sean Bryson of Sylva; one sister, Evelyn Ledbetter of California; 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.



Nancy Long

Nancy E. Long, 90, of Webster, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2006, at The Heritage at Town Center in Harrisburg, after a period of declining health.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, at Fairview Memorial Gardens.

She was an avid gardener and attended Webster Baptist Church. She was a volunteer at Harris Regional Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Long, and one son, David Long.

Surviving are three daughters, Charlotte DeVall of New Orleans, La., Doretta Haller of Concord and Doreen Long of Harrisburg; one granddaughter and two great-grandchildren.

Gertrude Cope

Gertrude Cope, 96, of Lyman, Wash., died Monday, Nov. 20, 2006, at the Burton Care Center in Burlington, Wash.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 24, at the Lemley Chapel in Sedro-Woolley, Wash., with the Rev. Billy Farrar officiating. Burial followed at the Lyman Cemetery.

She was born in Sylva on Oct. 16, 1910 to the late John and Arlecia Hooper Melton. She attended school in Sylva and resided here until 1945, when she and her husband moved to Lyman. She resided in Lyman until 1952, when she moved to Eureka, Calif. She returned to Lyman in 1965. She enjoyed gardening, canning, quilting, crocheting and reading.

She is preceded in death by her husband, James Cope, who died in 1977; three brothers, Paul Melton, Mark Melton and Merritt Melton; and two sisters, Carrie Gates and Effie Whitener.

Surviving are one daughter, Arlecia Jo Moffet of Sedro-Woolley; two sisters, Willnell Stiles and Arbie Armstrong, both of Waynesville; two grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Lyman Cemetery or United General Hospital.

Shannon Trantham

Shannon Glenn Trantham, 29, of Connor Road, Sylva, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2006, at Mission Hospital’s Memorial campus in Asheville after a brief illness.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, at New Hope Baptist Church, with the Revs. Mike Moore, Eddie Stillwell and Chris Willett officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers included Rick West, Terry Adams, Jimmy Ammons, James Caldwell, Mike Trehern, and Bobby Lambert.

A native of Haywood County, he had lived in Jackson County for several years. He was a 1996 graduate of Swain High School and had graduated from Western Carolina University with a degree in computer science. He was an avid fisherman and deer hunter and had received a black belt in karate, which he had been licensed to teach since the age of 14. He was employed at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino and was a member of Lake Junaluska First Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Glenn and Lenora Trantham and Ted and Evelyn Raby.

Surviving are his mother and stepfather, Brenda Raby Jones and Henry Jones of Tuckasegee; his father, Glenn Charles Trantham of Maggie Valley; and five sisters, Sabrina Whitaker and Ilyanna Cable, both of Maggie Valley, Tammy Cabe and Cindy Jones, both of Sylva, and Kathy Jones of Charlotte.

Kyle Cashwell

Kyle Taylor Cashwell, 19, of High Point, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, in the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Home, with the Revs. David Noyes, Geroge Cashwell and Jack Luther officiating. Burial followed in Floral Garden Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Chris Moore, Tom McHone, Tyler Hodgin, Chip Cromer, Austin Pendry, and Tyler Pendry.

He was born in High Point on Jan. 24, 1987, to Wes and Anne Cashwell. He was a sophomore at Western Carolina University, where he was a member of Theta Xi fraternity, and a 2005 graduate of Andrews High School in High Point. He was a member of Northwood United Methodist Church and attended Oakview Baptist Church, where he was active in the youth group. He was a member of Boy Scouts Troop 42, where he served in various troop offices and received the Eagle Scout Award and the God and Country Award, and was a member of the Order of the Arrow.

Surviving in addition to his parents are one brother, Carson Cashwell of High Point; his paternal grandfather, Eugene Cashwell of High Point; and his maternal grandmother, Peggy Christy of High Point.

Terrell Cagle

Terrell Hensley Cagle, 63, of Skyland Drive, Sylva, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, Nov. 30) at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Revs. Randy Hyatt, Frank Brooks, Earl Holden and Dr. Jack Robinson officiating. Burial will follow in Love Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ricky Mathis, Jeff Gunter, David Austin, James Conner, Michael Conner and Mark Conner.

The family was scheduled to receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a son of the late Carmel and Genevia Austin Cagle. He had retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation, where he worked in the sign department, and was an avid outdoorsman.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, his twin Terry Cagle and Genten Cagle; and two sisters, June Cagle and Judy Cagle.

Surviving are his wife of 25 years, Carol Mathis Cagle; one daughter, Cora Cagle Cox of Monroe; one son, Jason Cagle of Sylva; one brother, J.C. Cagle of Tulsa, Okla.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Carl Nienstedt

Carl W. Nienstedt III, 56, of Webster, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006, at his residence.

Private services will be held at a later date.

He was a son of Dr. Carl W. Nienstedt Jr. of Glassboro, N.J., and the late Mary Ann Plummer Nienstedt. He had retired from the Smoky Mountain Center.

Surviving in addition to his father are his wife, Marta Leone Nienstedt; two sons, Zack Nienstedt and Alex Nienstedt, both of Webster; one brother, Jeffrey Nienstedt of Glassboro; and three sisters, Barbara Nienstedt McCormack and Kathie Nienstedt Scaffidi, both of Washington Township, N.J., and Beth Nienstedt Wheeler of Ewa Beach, Hawaii.

Don Ledford

Don H. Ledford, 75, of Racking Cove Road, Sylva, died unexpectedly Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006.

Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, at Long Branch Cemetery, with the Rev. David Harris officiating. The U.S. military conducted graveside rites.

A native of Buncombe County, he was the last surviving son of the late Lawrence A. Ledford and Dovie McClure Hurst. He had lived in Jackson County since 1972 and retired from the U.S. Air Force, having served in the Korean War.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Mamie Dean Ledford; three daughters, Donna Jones of Cullowhee, Cindy Justice of Sylva and Julie Ricca of Royal Palm Beach, Fla.; one son, Robert Ledford of Waynesville; and six grandchildren.

Paul Dills

Paul Bunyon Dills, 63, of Newport News, Va., formerly of Cullowhee, died unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 20, 2006, at his residence.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24, at Black Mountain Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Rev. Roger Stewman officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Pine Ridge Cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, he was a son of the late Robert Bunyon and Ivalee Mull Dills. He had lived in Newport News for more than 30 years and had retired from a ship yard. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed whittling.

Surviving are his wife, Elisha Dills; one stepdaughter, Mary Scruggs of Newport News; three brothers, Alonza Dills of Sylva, Sterling Dills of Cullowhee, and Michael Dills of Marietta, S.C.; five sisters, Wilma Farmer, Mary Cook and Irene Coggins, all of Sylva, Ethel Keener of Cullowhee and Katherine Catrell of South Carolina; and one granddaughter.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Sherlie Ensley

Sherlie Brown Ensley, 96, of Laramie Drive, Sylva, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006, at his residence after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, with the Rev. Loy Kennedy officiating. Burial was in Old Field Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Brad Morgan, Kevin Morgan, Neal Morgan, Charlie Cook, Ronnie Cook and Frankie Buchanan.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was the last surviving child of A.L. and Laura Sherrill Ensley. He was a retired merchant and farmer and had co-owned Ensley Store. He was an avid fisherman and cattleman and Atlanta Braves fan. He attended Love’s Chapel United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 72 years, Maude Cooper Ensley.

Paul Chancellor

Herbert Paul Chancellor, 67, of University Heights Road, Cullowhee, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2006, at Mission Hospital’s St. Joseph campus in Asheville after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, at Cullowhee Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Revs. Dr. Jeffery Vickery and Tonya Vickery officiating.

Burial was in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Gainer, Ala., under the direction of Dillard Funeral Home of Troy, Ala.

A native of Montgomery, Ala., he was a son of the late Herbert Alto and Roma Hataway Chancellor. He had lived in Jackson County since 1969 and was a 1966 graduate of Samford University in Birmingham. He had retired from Eckerd’s, where he worked as a pharmacist, and had served as a deacon and on several committees at Cullowhee Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Etheree Burkett Chancellor; two daughters, Amanda Caroline Ryan of Indianapolis, Ind., and Cordelia Meyer of Cullowhee; one son, Herbert Charles Chancellor of Bloomington, Ind.; one sister, Mary Ann Eifert Brown of LaPine, Ala.; and six grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Cullowhee Baptist Church Renovation Fund, P.O. Box 37, Cullowhee, NC 28723.
