Get out your cameras and scrapbooks – The Sylva Herald plans to feature both nostalgic and current Christmas photos in the newspaper’s annual holiday special section, which will be published Thursday, Dec. 21.

“Christmas Old and New,” this year’s readers’ Christmas photo gallery, is open to anyone with a connection to Jackson County and photographs from any year. Submitted pictures can be of any size, may be either black-and-white or color and can be either prints from film cameras or e-mailed digital images.

While portraits will be considered, preference will be given to candid images that capture the spirit of the holiday season; photos from 25 or more years ago are especially welcome, said Herald Editor Lynn Hotaling.

“Our ‘Then and Now’ and ‘Back Then’ features have proved to be so popular that we think readers would especially enjoy seeing images from an earlier time,” Hotaling said. “We hope everyone will look through their family photos and share their best ones with the community.”

Readers are invited to submit old and new Christmas photos, like this 1950s shot of Mary Anne Roos and her brothers she shared last year, for a holiday photo gallery the newspaper will include in its Dec. 21 Christmas special section. For more information, call 586-2611 and ask for Nick Breedlove.

As many of the submitted photos as possible will be published in the Christmas special section or in The Herald.

Readers should not limit submissions to members of their own family, Hotaling said, adding that teachers and Sunday school teachers may have a wealth of stored photos from holiday events.

“We’ve all seen those adorable photos of tiny angels and wise men in church plays or icing-covered preschoolers constructing gingerbread houses or making Christmas cookies,” she said. “Those types of images would make this year’s section truly special for our community.”

To submit a photo, stop by The Herald office and fill out a brief form or use the one available on our Web site, www.thesylvaherald.com. Photos can be of individuals or groups but must have a Christmas theme. They do not have to have been taken by the person who submits them.

“This is not a photo contest, though we will have to make some judgments with regard to community interest and appeal when choosing which pictures to publish,” Hotaling said. “We encourage anyone who has an interesting photo in their family collection to submit it, regardless of whether they know everything about it or who happened to take it. If such a photo is published, our readers may provide all sorts of information, just as they do for our ‘Back Then’ images.”

For those with only one copy of a treasured family photo, Herald Photo Director Nick Breedlove will scan photos at the newspaper’s Main Street office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays through Dec. 13 from 9 until 11 a.m.

Deadline for entries is Wednesday, Dec. 13.

For more information, call Breedlove at 586-2611, ext. 310 or contact him by e-mail at nick@thesylvaherald.com.
