Mustang swim teams open with relay meet
Smoky Mountain’s men’s and women’s swim teams opened their seasons Nov. 17 with a relay meet hosted by Asheville School.
The Lady Mustangs placed third while the men were fifth.
Roberson won the women’s meet with 183 points followed by Asheville School (94), SM (59), Asheville High (57.5), Brevard (47), Owen (29) and Carolina Day (28).
Roberson also took the men’s meet with 132 points followed by Asheville High (120.5), Asheville School (116), Brevard (33), SM (29), Owen (8) and Carolina Day (6).
The teams are coached by Peter Hughes and Bill Bowers. Hughes said he was pleased with the results and the effort of the swimmers.
The Asheville Splash Relay included only four of the normal 14 events. The meet gave swimmers an opportunity to work as a team and practice a variety of strokes.
SM’s squads include several first-time swimmers, who are motivated and making good progress, the coaches said.
The teams are led by senior captains Anthony McDowell, Catherine Toledo and Natalie Woodard.
Other returning swimmers are Annelise Davis, Katie Hayes, Kelly Moore, Miranda Myers, Ally Sapienza, Caitlin Stehling and Josh Young.
Swimmers new to the squad include Nicole Benavides, Misha Bludworth, Hannah Collins, Senora Lane, Laura Larios, Shannon Oliver, Will Pearce, Martha Savage, Patrick Savell, Paige Seago, Amanda Smith and Ali Taylor.
SM was slated to host Tuscola in Cherokee on Wednesday. The remainder of the schedule is as follows:
Dec. 2 – at Roberson; 6 – at Brevard: 16 – at Roberson; 20 – Franklin at Cherokee.
Jan. 6 – at Tuscola; 15 – West Henderson at Skyland; 20 – Western Athletic Conference Meet at Asheville School; 23 – at Rabun Gap, Ga.
