Civic Orchestra to hold Tuesday concert at WCU
The Western Carolina Civic Orchestra will give its first concert of the 2006-07 season Tuesday, Dec. 5, at 8 p.m. in the Coulter recital hall at Western Carolina University.
The program will feature symphonic music from the baroque era through the romantic period and on to contemporary pieces, including famous music from the movies.
The concert will begin with “Hungarian March” (Rakoczy) by Hector Berlioz, followd by “Prelude, Chorale and Fugue” by J.S. Bach. The program continues with the first movement of “Symphony No. 97” by Joseph Haydn and “Serenata” by Leroy Anderson. The orchestra will then be joined by 12 young violin and cello students of local teachers, who will have the experience of playing with a full symphony orchestra on “Celebration” by G.F. Handel and a “Star Wars” medley by John Williams.
The Civic Orchestra, conducted by William Henigbaum, is made up of student and faculty musicians from WCU, along with students from Jackson, Macon, Swain, Cherokee and Buncombe counties. The programs is partially funded by a grassroots grant from the N.C. and Jackson County Arts councils.
