Author Ron Rash to discuss acclaimed book at library

Ron Rash, author of “Saints at the River,” and winner of many major literary awards, will speak at the Jackson County Public Library at 7 p.m., on Monday, Dec. 4, as part of “Together We Read,” Western North Carolina’s community reading program.

The evening’s event will be held in the library conference room and is free to the public. “Saints at the River” deals with the controversy generated when a young girl’s drowning in a protected wild river leads to many personal, community, and federal dilemmas. The book is this year’s Together We Read selection.

Rash is the author of three novels, three volumes of poetry, two books of short stories, and a children’s book. He is currently the Parris Distinguished Professor in Appalachian Cultural Studies at Western Carolina University.

“Saints at the River” has won the Weatherford Award for Fiction presented by the Appalachian Studies Association and Berea College; Southeast Booksellers’ Association Award for Best Work of Fiction; and the Southern Book Critic Circle Award for 2005. Rash recently received the prestigious Sir Walter Raleigh Award, which is given to outstanding regional authors.

The Together We Read initiative, now in its fifth year, involves libraries, bookstores, colleges and universities, schools, museums, community organizations and clubs in 21 counties. It is funded by the N.C. Humanities Council and several regional sponsors.

For more information about the program, call Edith Oldt at 586-2016. For more information about Together We Read, visit online at www.togetherweread.org.
