Looking up Dillsboro’s Webster Street, the 100-plus-year-old Jarrett House still takes center stage. Constructed around 1884 by Dillsboro founder William Allen Dills, the Jarrett House, center in both the old and new photos, was originally named the Mt. Beulah Hotel. It was purchased from Dills in 1894 by Robert Jarrett and renamed the Jarrett Springs Hotel after the new owner and a sulphur spring once located behind the hotel. Today the Jarrett House is owned by Jim and Jean Hartbarger. The top photo is believed to date from around 1930 because the tourist cabins built by M.B. Cannon during the 1930s have not yet been constructed. Those cabins are now connected and house Dogwood Crafters, lower right in bottom photo. The house on the right in the older photo now belongs to former Dillsboro Mayor Wade Wilson; its roof peak is visible in the lower photo. A gas station selling Gulf gasoline once occupied the left corner. The sign on the right corner in the older photo reads “Asheville 54 miles; Murphy 72 miles.” – Photo courtesy of Peggy Mason (top) and Herald photo by Nick Breedlove
