Then and now

110906thenritztheaterbw
The Sylva Herald has been publishing its popular “Then and Now” feature on a weekly basis for more than a year, and the newspaper is running out of file photos that can be replicated. For that reason, The Herald will alter the format most weeks to publish interesting photos, like the one above shared by Nancy Buchanan, which shows Army recruits gathered in front of the old Ritz Theater (once located in Sylva’s Main Street municipal parking lot) departing Sylva on Sept. 3, 1942, for World War II. She knows her uncles, Carl Lewis, who is 13th from left of those standing (white shirt to the right of a man with his arms folded), and Fred Ashe, who is seventh from the right, also standing. Anyone who knows others in the photo is asked to call Lynn Hotaling at 586-2611, ext. 206, or send an e-mail to lynn@thesylvaherald.com. Any information we obtain will be added with the photo to The Herald’s online “Then and Now” archives and included in “Things & Stuff.” The Herald will continue a “Then and Now” at least once a month. Readers who have photos taken in Jackson County that are at least 25 years old and include a recognizable feature (such as an existing building, highway, mountaintop or ridgeline) are invited to submit them for use in “Then and Now.” Photos can be dropped off or mailed to the newspaper office. As a convenience to those who would prefer not to let their cherished photos out of their sight, Herald photographer Nick Breedlove will scan photos Tuesday and Wedesday mornings between 10 and 11 a.m. Those with questions about potential “Then and Now” photos may contact Breedlove at 586-2611, ext. 310, or nick@thesylvaherald.com.
