Then and now

A section of U.S. 441 on the Macon County side of Cowee Mountain near Gold City slid away after a period of heavy rain and was being repaired in April 1956. Visible in the photo is the Thomas Jefferson Scott home. The photo was published in the April 19, 1956, edition of The Sylva Herald. According to Olin Buchanan of Savannah community, that area of the highways was plagued by slides for several years after it was constructed around 1950. "They eventually drilled horizontal wells into the hillside and drove in pipes to drain the water," Buchanan said, adding that one pipe stuck out and ran a full stream of water for years. Identification help came from Jim Gray, Olin Buchanan, Tim Barker and Judy Bumgarner.
