The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Effie Bridges

Effie Leftwich Bridges, 88, of Sulphur Springs, Texas, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2006, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, in the chapel of Tapps Funeral Home in Sulphur Springs.

She was the daughter of the late William Riley Dennis and Nettie Adelaide Wallis. She owned and operated the Greyhound bus station in Sulphur Springs for several years. She also worked as a bookkeeper for Askew and Buford, pharmacists. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church and sang with the nationally recognized Silvertone Choir.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Rayford Leftwich, in 1958, and her second husband, Huell Bridges, in 1991.

Surviving are two daughters, Linda Groves of Webster and Paula Easton of Spring, Texas; seven grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.



Nancy Potts

Nancy Ensley Potts, 73, of Fairview Road, Sylva, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2006, at her residence, after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 16, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, with the Revs. Dan Stiles and Mike Farmer officiating. A private burial service followed in Fairview Memorial Gardens.

A native of Swain County, she had lived in Jackson County for most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Vearl and Mildred Ensley. She was a member of Love’s Chapel United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Harriett Jean Ensley and Sybil Florence Ensley.

Surviving are one daughter, Shirley Potts Correll of Greenville, S.C.; two sons, Eddie Potts of Sylva and Bobby Potts of Asheville; three sisters, Patsy Cowan and Nell Bryson, both of Sylva, and Sue Tatham of Etowah; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

James “Bo” Blanton

James Monroe “Bo” Blanton, 83, of Easley, S.C., formerly of Whittier, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home, with the Rev. Steve Webb officiating. Burial followed in Gunter Cemetery.

He was a son of the late Roy Mark Blanton and Bertha Bradley. He was of the Baptist faith and an avid hunter and fisherman. He had retired from the Department of Transportation as an auto mechanic.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Frankie Queen Blanton; one son, Robert Blanton; one sister, Mildred Fayett; and one brother, David Eugene Blanton.

Surviving are one son, James Earl Blanton; three sisters, Edna Staunch, Lois Farr and Linda Pearson; one brother, Amel Blanton; six grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.



Norton Myers

Taylor Norton Myers, 84, of Bryson City, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006.

Services were scheduled to be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, at Bryson City United Methodist Church, of which he was a member, with the Rev. David Russell officiating.

Burial followed at Bryson City Cemetery. Members of the Bryson City Lions Club served as pallbearers.

He was a son of the late Cannie Myers and Essie Norton Myers. He owned and operated Myers Motel for 30 years. He had been a member of the Lions Club for 50 years. He had served in World War II as an aviator for the Army Air Corps. He attended the University of Tennessee and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hilda Brown Myers; and one brother, James P. Myers.

Surviving are one son, John Cannie Myers of Asheville; one daughter, Carol Annette Saunooke of Cherokee; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Bryson City United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 817, Bryson City, NC 28713.

Bill Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Edwin Queen

101906edwinqueenEdwin Dale Queen, 51, of Sunrise Park, Sylva, died Monday, Oct. 16, 2006, at his residence after an extended illness.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, Oct. 19) in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, with the Revs. Terry Jenkins and Sherrill Ammons officiating.

Burial will follow in Fairview Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Sandy Johnson, Rob Messer, Tony Scott, Jerry Scott, Mike Putman and Eddie Putman. Honorary pallbearers will be James Middleton, Charlie Mathis and Doug Rowe.

The family was scheduled to receive friends from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a son of Grace Queen of Sylva and the late T.H. Queen. He was a 1973 graduate of Sylva-Webster High School. He was a forklift operator with T & S Hardwoods for 30 years and an avid racing fan. He was a member of Wilkesdale Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Debbie Smith Queen; one daughter, Heather Long of Sylva; one sister, Edna Kreigsman of Hendersonville; and two grandchildren.

Maude Bryson

Maude Cunningham Greene Bryson, 78, of Cabe Road, Sylva, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a brief illness.

Services were scheduled to be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, with the Rev. Loy Kennedy officiating.

A daughter of the late James B. Cunningham, Sr. and Gypsie Conner Cunningham, she was born Oct. 19, 1927. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a member of Wesleyanna Methodist Church. After her retirement from A & P, she participated in the Golden Age Club and was an avid bowler. She was a competitor in the Senior Games. This was the first year in 19 that she had not competed at the state level.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ralph Greene, Sr.; her second husband, D.H. Bryson, Sr.; one son, Ralph Greene, Jr.; and three brothers, James B. Cunningham, Jr., Jack E. Cunningham and Charles E. Cunningham.

Surviving are two daughters, Nancy Zachmann and Vicki Greene, both of Sylva; two grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.
