ALSO ON TAP AT CITY LIGHTS are productions of Sylva storyteller Gary Carden’s play, “The Prince of Dark Corners” as a fund-raiser for the new library. The shows will be at City Lights and will have reserved seats. Dates are Friday and Saturday, Oct. 20 and 21, at 7 p.m. According to Gary, these Sylva performances will be part of a series of productions of the play, beginning with a performance at Brasstown’s John C. Campbell Folk School on Wednesday, Oct. 18, and continuing Thursday, Oct. 19, in Andrews. Seats for the Sylva shows can be reserved by calling City Lights. Ticket cost is $10.
UNITED COMMUNITY BANK has completed the acquisition of First Charter’s banking office in Sylva, and the location has opened as United Community Bank. “We are excited to welcome these bankers to the United team in Sylva,” said Greg Hining, president of UCB – North Carolina. Joshua Brant will head United’s new office at 55 Asheville Hwy, about 2 miles from the existing United location at 1640 E. Main St.
THE SECOND WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA POTTERY FESTIVAL will bring a collection of the best potters in the South to downtown Dillsboro on Saturday, Nov. 4. This juried event will showcase the work of 36 potters representing six states and four educational institutions. The daylong event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine, and will include throwing and firing demonstrations. SOUL INFUSION TEA HOUSE will host eight-string jazz guitarist and songwriter Andy Schneider of New York tonight (Thursday) at 7 p.m. The event is free, and there is no cover charge. All ages may attend.
SO FAR LAST WEEK’S 1956 photo (below) with the pigs has drawn two responses. Both Deanne Gibson Roles and Carolyn Robison pegged county agent Paul Gibson in the center of the photo and his assistant, Allman Brawley, behind him. Roles, who is the daughter of Paul Gibson, said she figures it’s a 4-H photo. Robison, who worked in the Extension Office for Ken Perry, who took Gibson’s place as county agent, said others could be agents from other counties or visiting specialists from N.C. State University, who might have been judging the hogs. Anyone with additional information, especially where the picture might have been taken, is asked to call us at 586-2611.
