The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Jimmy Warren

Jimmy Warren, 63, of Sylva, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2006.

Services were held at noon Friday, Oct. 6, at Black Mountain Veterans Cemetery.

The son of the late Alexander H. Warren and Myrtice Roberts Warren, he was a member of the Baptist faith and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was an avid woodworker, fisherman and barbecue chef.

Surviving are his wife, Patrcia Warren; and two stepchildren, Jon Riley and James Riley.

Memorials may be made to Jackson County Hospice.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Marguerite Scull

Marguerite B. Scull, 97, of Cullowhee, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at Cullowhee Presbyterian Church, of which she was a member. The Rev. Sam Hale officiated. Burial followed at Fairview Memorial Gardens.

A daughter of the late Edwin S. Biehl and Lillie Fluck Biehl, she had lived on the Mill Creek Farm in Acme before moving to Jackson County in 1990. She belonged to two bridge clubs and enjoyed gardening. She had traveled to Europe extensively.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Evelyn Biehl.

Surviving are two sons, Richard W. Iobst of Cullowhee and Herbert Julius Scull of Troutville, Va.; one daughter, Carol Roberta Groscup of Geigertown, Pa.; one sister, Marva Knoll of Allentown, Pa.; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Ed Conner

Clifton “Ed” Conner, 82, of Sylva, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2006.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Revs. Carl Adams and David Harris officiated. Burial followed at Old Field Cemetery.

A son of the late Thad Conner and Emma Moore, he was a member of Laurel Branch Baptist Church. He enjoyed gardening and farming. He had been employed by T&S and Hennessee Lumber for 34 years.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Brenda Harris, and one son, Cecil Mathis.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret Virginia Conner; three daughters, Minnie Haney, Linda Bowers, and Rose Mary Conner; three sisters, Annie Cordell, Lucille Cooper and Marie Camby; 17 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.



Kenneth Rose

Kenneth B. Rose, 74, of Mary Lambert Farm Road, Whittier, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2006, at his residence, after a period of declining health.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Thursday, Oct. 12), at Olivet Methodist Church. The Revs. Steve Phillippi and Cody Lambert will officiate. Burial will be in Reagan Cemetery.

A native of West Virginia, he was a son of the late Stella Pearl Dowdle.

He had lived in Mantua, Ohio, for 50 years as well as being a part-time resident of Whittier. He was a retired carpenter.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Reba Reagan Rose, who died in 2005; two brothers, Paul and Tex; and a sister, Billie.

Surviving are two daughters, Mandaleen Patrick of Cherokee and Patricia Kramer of Solon, Ohio; one son, Jeffrey Rose of Mantua; one brother, Jess Dowdle of Columbus, Ohio; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.



Earl Smith

Earl Stoughton Smith, 79, of Sylva, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006.

Services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8, at the United Methodist Church of Cashiers.

The son of the late Earl Wilbur Smith and Ada Stoughton, he was born Feb. 21, 1927, in Peoria, Ill. He grew up in Michigan and Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and graduated from the University of Florida in 1949.

He played professional football for the Chicago Bears in 1950 and 1951.

He had served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

He was an architect in Cashiers and Orlando, Fla., and enjoyed traveling the islands of the Bahamas.

He was preceded in death by one son and two daughters.

Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Ethel Smith; 11 children, 23 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Lewis Rathburn Center, 121 Sherwood Rd., Asheville, NC 28803 or to the Glenville-Cashiers Rescue Squad.

William Elmore

William Elmore, 95, of Franklin, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8, at Snow Hill-Iotla United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Donna Cobb officiating.

He was the son of the late John Baxter Elmore and Dora Jenkins.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nell James.

Surviving are three sons, Eugene L. Elmore of Trabuco Canyon, Calif., the Rev. Louis Walter-William James Sr., of Morganton, and William Glenn Elmore of Morehead City; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Parker Beck

Parker Hugh Beck, infant son of Bruce and Cynthia Brown Beck of Clyde, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006.

A private graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 9, with the Rev. Dennis Burrell officiating.

Surviving in addition to his parents are maternal grandparents, John and Pat Brown of Cullowhee; paternal grandparents, Bruce and Roberta Beck of Canton; and maternal great-grandparents, Lila and Leroy Ashe of Cleveland, S.C.

Melton-Riddle Funeral home was in charge of arrangements.



Richard Breakiron

Richard Breakiron, 79, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006, at the residence of his daughter, Dawn Breakiron, in Webster.

Services and burial will be held in West Point, N.Y. under the direction of William F. Hogan Funeral Home, Highland Falls, N.Y.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.



Nelta Bradley

Nelta Elders Bradley, 77, of Carolina Drive, Whittier, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006, at her residence, after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Nations officiating.

Burial followed in Elders Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jamie Bradley, Kevin Cooper, Brandon Bradley, Andy Bradley, Nathan Morgan and Brandon Sutton.

A native of Jackson County where she had lived most of her life, she was a daughter of the late Candler and Helen Elders. She was a member of Piney Mountain Baptist Church.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Bradley, who died in 1987; an infant son, Larry Bradley; three sisters, Nola Elders Gibson, Inez Elders Settlemyer and Jessie Elders Sneed Ridley; and two brothers, Bill Elders and Dallas Elders.

Surviving are four sons, Dennis Bradley, Jerry Bradley, Michael Bradley and Bill Bradley, all of Whittier; two daughters, Gail Brooks and Pam Cooper, both of Whittier; one brother, Joe Elders of Whittier; one sister, Rosemary Segle of Gaffney, S.C.; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Piney Mountain Baptist Church Youth Fund, c/o Patsy Gunter, 3986 US Hwy. 74 W., Whittier, NC 28789.



Marjorie Fox

Marjorie I. Fox, 88, of Skyland Care Center, Sylva, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, in Palatka, Fla., under the direction of Masters Funeral Home.

A native of Dayton, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late John R. Barber Sr., and Ethel Evans Barber. She had lived in Jackson County for the past several years. She retired from a paper manufacturing company in the bag department.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles A. Fox, Sr.

Surviving are one son, Charles A. Fox, Jr., of Sylva; one daughter, Nancy. C. Bortisser of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.



Gene Frizzell

Alton Eugene “Gene” Frizzell, 90, of Franklin, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2006.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 6, in the chapel of Macon Funeral Home, with the Revs. Wiley Gibson and George Ormsby officiating. Burial followed in the Stillwell Cemetery.

He was born in Webster to the late Wilburn Don Frizzell and Selma Lewis Frizzell. He owned Frizzell Farm Supply and was a member of Mount Hope Baptist Church.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Velma Louise Morgan Frizzell, who died May 11, 1989; one infant daughter; and two brothers, Clifford Frizzell and George Frizzell.

Surviving are his wife of 15 years, Hope Frizzell; one daughter, Dottie Dockery of Franklin; two stepsons, the Rev. Larry Kling of Ono Island, Ala., and Dr. Gary L. Kling of Greensboro; three brothers, Grady Frizzell of California, and Carroll Frizzell and Darrell Frizzel, both of Sylva; four sisters, Bonnie Dietz and Doris Crowe of Sylva, Helen Bradshaw of California and Elizabeth Gay of Westville, Ohio; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Mount Hope Baptist Church Building Fund, 199 Old Patton Rd., Franklin, NC 28734, or the First Baptist Church Elevator Fund, 69 Iotla St., Franklin, NC 28734.



Frances Arneach

Frances Newman Arneach, 88, of Jeff Arneach Road, Cherokee, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2006, at his residence, after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, at Rock Springs Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Revs. Red Bradley and Greg Morgan officiated.

Burial followed at Arneach Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Steve Youngdeer of VFW Post #8013. Pallbearers were Cheyenne Arneach, Gene Thompson, Edward Thompson, Dewayne Lossiah, Josh Lossiah, Leonard Long, Curtis Arneach and John Arneach. Nephews were honorary pallbearers.

A lifelong resident of Cherokee, he was a son of the late Jefferson and Sarah Saunooke Arneach. He had served in World War II as a Merchant Marine.

He served two terms as vice chief and two terms on the Tribal Council of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

He had served as Cherokee’s chief of police and was one of the founding members and first captains of the rescue squad. He also served as head of Community Services, and director of Qualla Housing Authority, Qualla Civic Center, and CAP Alcoholism Program. He had coached youth basketball in the community for several years. He was the owner of Lost Cove Campground.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Bessie Bird George, Belle Bird Bradley, Marjorie Arneach Rattler and Stella P. Arneach Bradley; and three brothers, David Bird, John Sam Sylvester and Richard Arneach.

Surviving are his wife, Dixie Cooper Arneach; one son, Lloyd Arneach, Sr.; one daughter, Sara “Tami” Arneach Hogner; one stepdaughter, Carolyn Henry; one stepson, Ralph Henry; four grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Piney Grove Baptist Church or Rock Springs Baptist Church.

Melton-Riddle Funeral home was in charge of arrangements.
