101206thorpededicationbletPower plant began generating 65 years ago this week - One of Jackson County’s more fascinating tales is the history of a local engineering marvel – a network of tunnels and steel pipe that channels the Tuckaseigee River’s West Fork through the mountains to a powerhouse below – completed in just 16 months and dedicated exactly 65 years ago. With World War II already raging in Europe, crews in Jackson County worked around the clock to build a massive hydroelectric project aimed at providing power for an aluminum plant in Tennessee. Sylva denies Allens Branch ETJ - A controversial proposal to extend Sylva’s zoning control past its city limits died last week for lack of a second. Town board member Maurice Moody made it clear during the hearing that he would not take part in....

According to transportation supervisor Tim Pannell, who works with the wildflower project, DOT’s goal is to balance wildflowers with bulbs and shrubs to achieve year-round interest. “We try to rotate flowers and put the prettiest ones in high traffic areas,” he said. With regard to the splashy fall-blooming cosmos above, Pannell said they were seeded July....

101206greenenergytGreen Energy Park opens - Smoky Mountain Biofuels co-owners Al Begley, left, and Sam Gray, address the crowd at the opening of Jackson County’s Green Energy Park last Friday (Oct. 6). Built on the county’s former landfill near Dillsboro, the facility captures methane gas emitted by the buried trash and uses it to power the businesses. “This park is showing in a microcosm the transition towards ‘green energy’ we have to make in North Carolina,” said N.C. State Energy Office Director Larry Shirley, seated....

SMHS ‘passes’ state ABC tests - The results are in, and Smoky Mountain High School has “passed” the state-mandated tests that are part of North Carolina’s ABC accountability standards. SMHS has met its expected growth according to Jackson County Superintendent Sue Nations, who indicated last week that local school officials are pleased with the SMHS showing in light of the fact that many high schools across the state....
