Woodring search gets TV spotlight - National television broadcasts have gotten people across the country involved in the search for wanted murder suspect John “Woody” Woodring. At the request of the Sylva Police Department, America’s Most Wanted’s Saturday show included information on Woodring. Film crews spent much of last week shooting in and around Sylva, and aired their profile on Woodring Sept. 30. Crews from CNN have also been covering the murder, and at one point last week the video was the most viewed on the channel’s Web site.


EDC members say they need ‘paper trail’ for $300,000 - Members of the county’s Economic Development Commission expressed concerns about property ownership and financial dealings during their Sept. 25 regular meeting. The main point of concern was a portion of the former Buster Brown property, which was purchased with EDC funds but belongs to the Jackson Development Corp., the EDC’s property-owning offshoot. Officials investigating possible improper school computer use - Local law enforcement officials are investigating the actions of a substitute teacher after students reported seeing “inappropriate material” on a computer screen last week. “There is a potential for criminal charges,” Jackson County Sheriff Jimmy Ashe said, though he declined to release the name of the substitute involved. Green Energy Park to begin operations - Jackson County will take steps toward becoming more environmentally-friendly with the opening of its Green Energy Park Friday (Oct. 6). Dillsboro’s antiques fair is set for Saturday - Dillsboro’s fourth annual antiques festival is set for this Saturday, Oct. 7, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sponsored by the Dillsboro Merchants’ Association, the event will include 15 antiques vendors, who will set up booths on Front Street.
