Two local men were arrested earlier this month in connection with a May robbery in East Fork community.

According to Capt. Steve Lillard of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, the Early Deitz Road burglary was reported May 26. Several items were stolen, including a safe, he said.

During the course of an investigation into the incident, some of the stolen items were found in the possession of Hunter Nelson Smith, 17, of Sylva, Lillard said.

Smith was arrested Sept. 5 and charged with breaking and entering, larceny and conspiracy, Lillard said. Because Smith was found to be in possession of a controlled substance at the time of his arrest, he was also charged with possession with intent to sell/deliver a Schedule IV controlled substance, Lillard said.

Also arrested in connection with the robbery was Ernest Victor “J.R.” Collins, 18, of Webster, Lillard said.

Collins, arrested on Sept. 7, was charged with conspiracy, according to Lillard.

Smith remains in jail in lieu of a $12,500 bond; Collins was released the day of his arrest after posting a $2,000 bond, Lillard said.
