Smoky Mountain spikers take win over Lady Mountaineers
Smoky Mountain took a 26-24, 25-19, 25-16 non-conference volleyball win over Tuscola on Sept. 18 at the SM gym.
With their sixth victory, the Lady Mustangs surpassed last year’s win total.
“We had some moments,” Coach Ken Walker said. “We passed pretty well and our serving was strong, but we didn’t play with any emotion.”
Amy Haggard put down 12 kills. Brittany Gilbert and Cassie Randall followed with eight apiece. Sarah Haggard had 30 assists.
SM took a 6-4 edge in game one after Amy Haggard served three points, including an ace. The Lady Mountaineers moved in front 12-8 and stayed on top until late in the game. The Lady Mustangs held off one game point then rallied for the win as Amy Haggard served the final four points, including two aces.
After falling behind early, SM tied the second game 9-9 on three points from Gilbert and kills by Megan Taylor and Kelli Woodard. Taylor reeled off seven points, including two aces, while Sarah and Amy Haggard both had kills as the Lady Mustangs opened a 17-11 advantage. The game ended on Gilbert’s kill with Amy Haggard serving.
SM took the lead for good in the third game at 7-5 after Amy Haggard served four points, including an ace, and Kelly Childress had a kill. Tuscola hung close, but Taylor served there points, including an ace, and Haggard had a kill for a 16-12 edge. Woodard’s three points, along with two kills by Amy Haggard and one by Randall, made it 20-12. Sarah Haggard’s three points, plus kills by Randall and Amy Haggard, brought the Lady Mustangs within a point of the win. The match ended on a side out.
Amy Haggard had 13 service points and didn’t miss in 17 serves. Taylor followed with 12 points and served 93.8 percent.
Team serving was 88 percent.
The Lady Mustang JVs won 25-21, 25-19.
“We played a great game,” Coach Natasha Wilson said. “It was our best game of the season.”
She singled out Natasha Key, Jordan Cagle and Annelise Davis for their net play and Shaneka Allen for her serving.
